Kevin drove his father’s sprint cars in the Midwest in the 1970’s and 1980’s before deciding that he was much better behind the keyboard than he was behind the wheel of a race car. Kevin’s articles have appeared in print in the The Alternate and National Speed Sport News, and online at Openwheelracers3.com. Kevin is a long-time member of the Yahoo! Racing History Group, serves on the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame induction committee, and provides the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame with research assistance. Born Richmond Beach, Wa. early 1920’s. Grew up within earshot of four operating speedways. As a young teenager, I was part of the “knothole gang”, watching races through the fences, or better yet, sneaking in.
Nearly every auto repair garage housed some type of race car. Often they would park them out front, and I developed a keen interest. My early race attempts began in 1939 at a 5/8 mile high banked dirt track. A Seattle newspaper, (Seattle Star) sponsored a 100 lap jalopy race, and my car was a “well used” former model T big car. My race lasted only two laps, as I was sidelined with a multitude of problems.
The next season (1940) I drove a roadster race on this same 5/8 speedway. This time I finished second behind the talented Tommy Leggee a very successful big car and midget driver. By now I had developed a “Swagger” and proceeded to practice at a ½ mile dirt horse track near Everett, Wa. I crashed badly, was hospitalized with serious injuries, lost a year of high school, and my reputation preceded me. When I attempted to enter any race tracks, I was refused entry.
Fast forward: WWII was upon us, auto racing was halted, and many of us were either drafted or joined the service. I chose the Navy, and it was a rewarding four years. I learned many skills that would later apply to building and repairing race cars. Upon discharge in 1946 I began a ten year career driving midgets in the Northwest. Washington, Oregon, and Canada. The family became larger, the purses became smaller, I hung up the battered helmet in 1956.
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
Over the years I would write short articles and submitted a few to Phyllis Devine of the Alternate Race paper. The late Phyllis was most helpful, and encouraged me to continue. Soon the articles became longer, and I finally made the move to publishing my book, Smoke, Sand, and Rubber. In it is my racing bio, and wherever possible I would bring along my fellow racers. The book was a six year effort, a lot of work, but rewarding in the end. Some of my short articles are on web sites in Australia, New Zealand, and our openwheelracers.3.com site.
Oh yes, I became “unretired” on May 12, 2010 at Post Falls Idaho, winning my first main event in 54 years, at age 87, while driving our 1947 vintage Kurtis Offy. We have been quite successful racing the car last summer, and are looking forward to another fun season in 2011

I was born April 11, 1930 in Seattle Washing and grew up and attended school in the Ballard area. I was totally unaware of auto racing until 1946 when I attended a Midget race at Playland Stadium in Seattle. I was hooked right from the start. Auto racing has been a big part of my life ever since.
My first ride came in 1948 in a Track Roadster. In 1950 I bought a Midget for $500. and raced that car and raced other cars for various owners with the Washington Midget Racing Assn. and the Oregon Racing Assn. 1950-1957. I must say that my racing during this time was not very successful. At the end of 1957, I took off for California with a Kurtis Ford 60 that I had recently purchased for $1000.
My destination was Oakland with intentions to run the Indoor races held there every year during January and February. It took me a few races to get the hang of it, but starting about halfway though the 12 race season I began winning a few heat races and 1 semi main event. My biggest thrill in racing up to that time came during the last race of that series. I qualified 4th fastest and made it into the Trophy Dash. The other three contestants were Davy Moses, Dickie Reese and Tommy Copp. I don't remember who won, but I came in last. I continued to race on and off with the Bay Cities Racing Assn. until 1980.
My non racing life took a big change right after the the 1958 indoor season ended. I decided to look for a job and stay in Northern California. I was hired by Greyhound lines as a bus driver in the San Francisco Bay area. I called my wife and told her to sell the house in Seattle. She said that was O. K. with her and that she would be looking forward to the move. She and my two sons (I have 3 sons but Donovan wasn't born until 1960) arrived about three months later. I worked on that bus driving job for the next 27 years until I retired in 1985. During those years I raced with the BCRA when it did not conflict with my job. I was never able to race a full season because of my work schedule, and some years I didn't race at all.
After retirement I started a new racing career with Vintage racing. I have raced Vintage Midgets in 6 western states. During that time I have driven for several owners, but mostly in my own cars. I usually travel with my son Donovan and our 2 Offy midgets. We try to run 15-20 events a year. I still enjoy driving race cars and plan to continue until I am no longer able to climb into the cockpit.
