Darland Set to Take on Canyon Region Contenders
Chargin’ Charles Kicks Off ASCS Canyon Title Defense Saturday at USA!
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (March 8, 2010) – Buckeye, Arizona’s Charles Davis, Jr., delivered car owner Jim Massey his first series championship by capturing the 2009 Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region title.
Davis begins the defense of that title this Saturday night when the ASCS Canyon Region launches the 2010 season atop USA Raceway’s 3/8-mile clay oval in Tucson, AZ.
A stout field of contenders will be even tougher on opening night, as wingless open wheel ace Dave Darland will make a rare Arizona appearance in an effort to take the money and run back to Indiana.
A triple crown champion with titles in the Sprint Car, Midget and Silver Crown ranks, Darland rallied from the tail of a “B” Main after heat race issues to finish fifth in last November’s wingless portion of the Western World Championships at USA Raceway.
Darland will pilot the BRAT Racing/Parker Stores No. 8 entry this Saturday night.
Meanwhile, Davis will try to add a 15th career ASCS Canyon Region score aboard the Massey No. 50 machine on Saturday night after reeling off three wins en route to the 2009 crown that he claimed by a 55-point margin over Phoenix shoe R.J. Johnson.
Saturday's Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region action at USA Raceway is slated to go green at 6:45 p.m.
The 3/8-mile USA Raceway clay oval is located east of Tucson off I-10 Exit 268, then 1.6 mile south on Craycroft Road, which turns into Los Reales. For more information, contact the track at 520-574-8515.
The Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region is currently slated for 15 overall nights of competition in 2010, including 13 nights in Arizona and a two-night Fourth of July weekend in New Mexico.
In its 19th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing, the American Sprint Car Series brings the best of Sprint Car racing to approximately 100 different tracks throughout 30 states and Canada. Anchored by the Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters, ASCS also consists of eleven different Regions throughout the nation.

Brown Edges Hockett on Battleground for ASCS Gulf South Glory!

Brian Brown drove the FVP No. 21 Maxim to ASCS Gulf South victory lane
Lonnie Wheatley, HIGHLANDS, Texas (March 6, 2010) – Missouri rivals Brian Brown and Jesse Hockett hooked up in an epic duel along the Gulf Coast Saturday night as Sprint Cars returned to the 3/8-mile Battleground Speedway for the first time in nearly ten years.
When the checkered flag flew upon the Third Annual Gulf Coast Nationals, it was Brown coming away with the $3,000 winner’s share in the capper of season-opening weekend competition for the ASCS Gulf South Region.
After trading the top spot a handful of times over the final ten circuits, Brown held the point the final two times around in the scheduled 25-lapper to take the win aboard the FVP No. 21 Maxim entry.

Jesse Hockett (75) and Brian Brown (21) traded the lead numerous times in the final lap
“Jesse and I have had a lot of good battles, it’s a lot of fun to race with him like that,” Brown commented in victory lane.
Had it not been for a late-race caution, eleventh-starting Oklahoma shoe Brady Bacon may very well have played the role of spoiler.
“I really should probably thank Brady for that one,” Brown explained. “I kept pounding the cushion and then he showed the low side just when that caution came out, that made all the difference.”
Gridding the main event outside row two, Brown chased pole starter Wayne Johnson and second-starter Hockett in the early rounds.
Hockett and Johnson diced for the point until “The Rocket” took command on the fifth round. Johnson’s run aboard a former Jason Johnson mount now owned by Joe Zierolf was cut short when a power steering line blew ten laps in.
Johnson’s misfortune nearly proved disastrous for Brown as well, with contact in turn four as Johnson checked up. “I hit him, I was lucky my race didn’t end right there,” Brown surmised.
Back under way, Brown kept the pressure on Hockett’s Don Ott-powered VKCC Motorsports No. 75 A.R.T. as Bacon and Tony Bruce, Jr., mixed it up for third.
Brown slipped by Hockett for the official lead on the 18th lap, with Hockett returning the favor a lap later. As the lead duo made another couple or so unofficial lead changes in the corners, Bacon broke free from Bruce and was about to dispose of Brown for second when a caution flew for Channin Tankersley’s stalled mount.

Brian Brown drove the FVP No. 21 Maxim to ASCS Gulf South victory lane
With Bacon’s hand tipped, Brown raced to the low side and ultimately battled past Hockett to post a narrow win.
A disappointed Hockett settled for runner-up honors, commenting that, “I never even saw the white flag. My hat’s off to Brian though, he did a good job.”
Bacon settled for third in the Tel-Star Communications No. 99 Triple-X, with Bruce, Jr., and 19th-starter Travis Rilat rounding out the top five.
Tommy Bryant was sixth, with Ray Allen Kulhanek in seventh. The night’s top passing points earner in heat race action, Ricky Logan returned from an opening lap stop on the track to claim eighth with Eric Baldaccini and Aaron Reutzel completing the top ten.
After Logan’s stop on the initial start of the feature, Klint Angelette, Scottie McDonald, Travis Knighton and Travis Elliott were eliminated in a wild turn four skirmish on the second try.
Brandon Berryman, Wayne Johnson, Hockett and Bryant topped heat race action for Saturday night’s 34-car field, with Travis Rilat winning the “B” Main.

Wright On In ASCS Gulf South Opener at GTRP

Gary Wright topped Friday night's ASCS Gulf South Region season opener
Lonnie Wheatley, BEAUMONT, Texas (March 5, 2010) – The American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region opened up the 2010 season in much the same way as 2009, with Gary Wright standing in victory lane at Golden Triangle Raceway Park.
For the second year in a row, “The Texan” topped the $3,000-to-win, 25-lap Prelude to the Gulf Coast Nationals to launch the season for the ASCS Gulf South Region atop the Golden Triangle clay.
However, rather than wait for the last lap to make the winning move like last year, Wright gunned into the lead at the outset aboard Scott Brown’s ASI-powered Lubbock Wrecker Service/The Shop No. 9x Maxim and never looked back en route to a third ASCS Gulf South season opening win.

Gary Wright (9x) outgunned 16-year-old Klint Angelette (19) at the outset
“As heavy as the track was tonight, it was real easy to get in trouble in traffic or really anywhere,” Wright explained. “We got lucky tonight and stayed out of trouble, we’ll get cleaned up and try to get another one tomorrow.”
A move past Tommy Bryant and Bruce Crockett in the final two laps of his heat race landed Wright in the redraw. And when he drew the number one pill, that may have been all the luck the four-time Lucas Oil National Sprint Car champion needed.
Weathering three red flag periods over the initial four circuits, including a pair on the initial two starts, Wright paced the early circuits in front of fellow front row starter Klint Angelette before Travis Rilat, Ricky Logan and Jesse Hockett freight trained the 16-year-old on a lap five restart.
After one final caution after nine circuits for Dustin Morgan’s turn four spin, the final 16 rounds ran off in non-stop fashion with Wright distancing himself from the field while lapping well into the top ten.
Rilat held off several challenges from Logan over the latter portion of the race for runner-up honors, with Logan settling for the show position. Hockett advanced from ninth in the early rounds to snare fourth, with Tony Bruce, Jr., rounding out the top five.
Brady Bacon crossed the stripe sixth, making it a sweep of the top six positions by prospective Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters championship contenders.
Brian Brown crossed the stripe in seventh, with two-time ASCS Gulf South champ Brandon Berryman the final car on the lead lap in eighth, just ahead of fellow Gulf South shoes Wes Miller and Scottie McDonald.
The initial attempt to start the main event was waved off for a Jimmy Brooks tumble in turn one, with the second start going red as well when reigning ASCS Gulf South champ Aaron Reutzel launched out of the park in turn two. Four laps later, Tommy Bryant tumbled in turn two as well. There were no injuries.
Brown, Angelette, Brooks, Wright and Morgan topped heat race action for the 37-car field, with Berryman and Reutzel winning the twin “B” Mains.

Danny Lasoski Collects Winter Nationals Win at Ocala Speedway
From, allstarsprint.com
Camargo, IL By Kelly Brown Public Relations Director- It was the opening event for the OReilly All Star Circuit of Champions Winter Nationals, so there was a bit of chill in the air but not enough to cool down the young guns and veteran drivers. On a night that looked as if the youth would out run experience, there was a cruel twist which sent a seasoned veteran to Victory Lane. The benefactor was Danny Lasoski who did not lead the most laps in the event, but he led the most important one that solidified his twenty-first OReilly All Star Circuit of Champions victory in Winter Nationals History.
On the front row of tonights feature event were young guns Brad Sweet and Cale Conley. When the Green Flag initially few it was not for long as Donny Schatz and Sam Hafertepe Jr. would make contact which would end the evening for the 15h and the15 would lose its front wing, but continue on at the back of the pack.
When the Green Flag waved in the crisp night air Conley would grab the lead and set sail with Sweet in his tire tracks. The two would run nose-to-tail until the first Yellow Flag flew over the event on Lap 8. It was for David Gravel who looped his 89g around and ended up in the infield.
After the short caution period, Conley and Sweet picked up where they left off. The duo was close and Sweet was working on Conley, he came close to executing the pass, but there would be another caution period to cool the action on the track. Gravel got low between Turn 1 and Turn 2, and then spun at the base of the track. Once the Green Banner flew, Conley and Sweet resumed their heated battle as seasoned veterans worked their way through traffic and began to catch the dueling duo.
With one lap to go the third through fifth consisted of Dale Blaney, Tim Shaffer, and Lasoski, all veterans in their own right with the two youngsters of Sweet and Conley in front of them. It looked as if the exuberance of youth would win out, but this is when everything took a turn. Going into turn three on the final lap Sweet made his move going high to get around Conley for the victory. Both tried to battle in the high groove and touched which sent both of their 410 racing machines tumbling and brought out the Red Flag.
The incident set up a Green-White-Checker finish for the veterans of the series to decide amongst them who would win. Lasoski inherited the lead and when the Green Flag flew, he defended his position. Once in the lead Lasoski did not look back to collect his first win at Ocala Speedway. Rounding out the top-five would be Shaffer, Blaney, Freddie Rahmer and Tim Kaeding.
The hard charger of the night was Doug Esh who picked up eleven spots on a track that was very hard to pass on. Also after starting at the tail of the field after losing his nose wing, Donny Schatz was able to battle back to finish in the top-ten.

Bryan Clauson Triples His Odds for Copper on Dirt Victory
Kevin Montgomery Tucson, AZ – Bryan Clauson will triple his chances for a victory at USA Raceway’s 4th Annual Copper on Dirt as he enters the event with a seat for all three divisions. While he is among many drivers planning to do triple duty, Clauson is arguably the guy to beat in 2010.
Notably one of the hottest open wheel drivers in the country going into 2010, Clausen will look to resume his success of 2009 and likely gain distance from a field of some of the best open wheel racers in the country. Twenty year old Clauson has the accomplishments of a seasoned veteran after racking up an incredible year filled with more than 20 victories in Sprint Car and Midget competition including the Belleville Midget Nationals, USAC Indiana Midget Week Champion, The Night Before the Brickyard, The Turkey Night Grand Prix and the Glenn Howard Memorial to name a few.
The 2009 National Midget Driver of The Year will come to Tucson driving the familiar Corey Tucker owned Parker Stone Company/Esslinger Midget entry that has been a stable of success. Clauson will add to his arsenal by joining the stout RWB Sprint Car team fielded by Scott Benic and a very powerful Tony Stewart Silver Crown team. From USAC JONES EYES USAC NATIONAL SPRINT TITLE #4
AS 2010 SEASON OPENS IN TAMPA FEBRUARY 8-10
Levi Jones of Olney, Ill. hopes to add his name to a short list of drivers who have won four championships in a single USAC National racing series. The 2010 Amsoil USAC Sprint Car season opens February 8-10 with the “Bubba Army Sprint Nationals” at East Bay Raceway Park in Gibsonton, Fla., a Tampa suburb.
The three-night racing program showcases USAC’s spectacular open-wheel competition on one of America’s most exciting short dirt ovals where wheelstands, bicycling and wheel-to-wheel competition are all part of the game, producing more passing in one night than many racing series provide in an entire season!
Jones earned his third USAC National Sprint car title last year and would become only the sixth driver to reach four titles in a single National series, joining A.J. Foyt (7 Championship Cars), Mel Kenyon (7 Midgets), Butch Hartman (5 Stock cars), Steve Butler (4 Sprints) and Rich Vogler (4 Midgets).
Jones will pilot the Bass Pro Shops/Chevy Tony Stewart Racing entry in the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night portions of East Bay’s 34th Winternationals, marking USAC’s first dirt-track Sprint races in the Sunshine state since Vogler’s victory at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa in 1987.
The 2005, 2007 and 2009 champion also finished second in the 2006 standings behind Josh Wise and his four wins last year brought his career total of USAC Sprint feature triumphs to 16. He also earned his second Indiana Sprint Week title last year, edging Bryan Clauson by a single point!
“It’s always nice to get out of Indiana in the winter time and enjoy the sunshine,” says Levi, who won a non-winged feature at East Bay three years ago. “It’s a racy track but it can change from one night to the next so you have to be at the top of your game to adjust to the conditions. I’m anxious to get back in the swing of things and it would be nice to get that fourth title.” He’ll be in a brand-new Maxim chassis to start the 2010 campaign.
Jones will face a formidable field in the three Florida events. Expected to compete are 2008 Sprint Champ Jerry Coons Jr., 2006 Champ Wise, 2002 Champ Tracy Hines and 1999 Champ Dave Darland. Hines won USAC’s last race in Florida, a Silver Crown event at the Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2007.
Other former USAC Sprint winners in Florida include Larry Dickson (two in 1970), and Bob Sweikert, Chuck Weyant and Pat O’Connor in USAC’s initial year, 1956. Sweikert’s win came in the first USAC Sprint race ever held, at Southland Speedway in West Palm Beach.

Hewitt also ranks in the top spots for all time career USAC Sprint Car feats and ultimately achieved a life long quest when he finished 12th in the 1998 Indianapolis 500. “This is a once in a life time opportunity to have such a great racer come to USA Raceway and we are extremely excited for him to be part of the Copper on Dirt,” said Benji Lyons of USA Raceway. “I can not wait to see the face’s on the people that are brave enough to get in and take a ride in the back seat of a sprint car with Jack Hewitt at the wheel.” The 4th Annual “Copper on Dirt” featuring USAC Silver Crown, USAC National/CRA Sprint Cars and USAC National/Western States Midgets all taking part in a sensational racing spectacle at Tucson’s USA Raceway’s for two nights on February 19th and 20th marking USA Raceway as one of only two dirt track venues to host USAC’s Triple Crown all in one event. As the 2010 racing season goes into to full swing, USAC championship hopefuls will make their way west to start the year off at one of the premier events of the season. More than a hundred of the nations top open wheel teams are anticipated to take part in the 4th Annual “Copper on Dirt” making this a must see event of 2010. 7 DIFFERENT SPRINT WINNERS IN A ROW AT USA RACEWAY? The six previous USAC Sprint races at the track have yielded six different winners. One of those was 2010 USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car point leader Damion Gardner of Concord, Calif. Gardner comes to Tucson with an unblemished 2010 record, leading all 60 laps of the two 30-lap series openers last week in Tampa, Fla. The other USAC winners at USA Raceway have been Jesse Hockett in 2005, Josh Pelkey and Cory Kruseman in 2006 and Charles Davis Jr. and Scotty Weir in 2007. Gardner has a 15-point lead over Brady Short in the 2010 standings and is a former USAC/CRA Sprint Car Champion (2005). He has 35 career USAC/CRA victories to lead the all-time standings over Kruseman, who has 28. Kruseman, however, set the 1-lap USAC/CRA Sprint car track record of 15.582 seconds at USA Raceway in 2005. The USAC Amsoil National and CRA Sprints join the USAC Silver Crown and USAC Mopar National and Western Midgets for this weekend’s “tripleheader” with preliminaries on Friday and semis and feature events on Saturday. Former “Copper on Dirt” Sprint champions include Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Shane Cottle and Darren Hagen. 4th “COPPER ON DIRT” NATIONAL/CRA SPRINTS AT TUCSON Gardner, the 2005 USAC/CRA Champion, leads the Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car standings into the “tripleheader” at the 3/8-mile dirt oval. The program features the USAC Silver Crown, Amsoil National and USAC/CRA Sprints and the USAC Mopar National and Western Midgets. Preliminaries are Friday, with semis and feature events on Saturday. A 40-lap Sprint race will be joined by a 30-lapper for the Midgets and a 50-lapper for the Silver Crown series. Darren Hagen is the defending Rosemont Copper “Copper on Dirt” Sprint champion, passing Kevin Swindell five laps from the end of last year’s race at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Ariz. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. won the 2007 inaugural and Shane Cottle won in 2008. Gardner, who has six Arizona USAC victories to his credit, five at Manzanita and one in 2006 at Tucson, trails A.J. Foyt and Dave Steele by just two wins for the all-time Arizona USAC lead. Mel Kenyon and Jerry Coons Jr. each have seven Arizona USAC wins. Jones is aiming for a record fourth USAC National Sprint Car championship after claiming titles in 2005, 2007 and last year. Mike Spencer of Temecula, Calif. is trying to win a third consecutive USAC/CRA Sprint car title, having swept championships in 2008 and 2009. But, when Shaffer’s engine soured less than two laps shy of Saturday night’s checkered flag, it was Oklahoma City native Wayne Johnson taking quick advantage to snare the $14,500 winner’s share in the 40-lap Ninth Annual Ronald Laney Memorial atop the semi-banked, 1/3-mile clay oval.
Johnson paced the final two circuits to take the coveted checkered flag aboard Glenn Styres’ Ohsweken Speedway/Rochester Americans No. 0x entry, collecting his 32nd career overall ASCS win in the process.
While Johnson enjoyed victory lane, Shaffer wasn’t the only leader to fall victim to ill fortune during the night, as two-time “Kings” winner Gary Wright cut a left rear tire after pacing the opening 20 rounds.
The four-time Lucas Oil National Sprint Car champion had led from the outset after starting from the pole position. Wright’s undoing came after a caution that sent Mark Smith pitside with engine woes.
After winning both the Thursday and Friday night features, fifth-starter Shaffer assumed the point and had a hefty payday within sight when his powerplant let go less than a mile from the checkered flag.
Johnson added the “Kings” crown to past Short Track Nationals and ASCS Knoxville Nationals glory, beating 2009 event winner Jesse Hockett to the stripe.
While Hockett settled for runner-up honors in the Don Ott-powered VKCC Motorsports No. 75 A.R.T., Canadian Lou Kennedy, Jr., finished off a strong weekend by taking the show position.
Travis Rilat crossed the stripe fourth, with Darren Long rounding out the top five. Tony Bruce, Jr., was sixth in front of Tommy Worley, Jr., and Idaho’s Joe Ramaker. Eastern Modified ace Stewart Friesen finished out his first full weekend of Sprint Car competition since a lone 2003 outing in ninth, with Sport Allen completing the top ten.
Friesen, Michael Miller, Bruce, Jr., and Glenn Styres topped Saturday night’s heat races, with J.D. Johnson, Michael Dupuy and David Brown winning the “B” Mains.
Wayne Johnson’s $14,500 winner’s take included the $10,000 originally posted by East Bay Speedway, $4,000 of the $7,000 kicked into the purse by the Laney family and another $500 from CnB Mushroom Farms.

Hockett Set to Defend Ronald Laney Memorial Win
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (February 23, 2010) – The American Sprint Car Series lifts the lid on an action-packed 2010 season of approximately 200 events with this weekend’s ASCS Rebel action at East Bay Raceway Park’s 34th Annual Winter Nationals. The three-night stand in Tampa, FL, concludes with Saturday’s $10,000-to-win Ninth Annual Ronald Laney Memorial on Saturday night.
And, set to defend his crown in the season opener, is Warsaw, Missouri’s Jesse Hockett, who became the ninth different winner of East Bay’s “Kings” portion of the Winter Nationals by storming to victory lane last year.
Fresh off a Mexico honeymoon, Hockett enters this season with a new, yet familiar look. Back to the familiar No. 75, this year’s VKCC Motorsports entry will sport a black and blue scheme reminiscent of earlier renditions of the popular team.
While Hockett returns to the familiar No. 75 in his bid for the 2010 Lucas Oil Sprint Car crown, he hopes to ride a new engine/chassis combination to victory lane this weekend with a Don Ott powerplant bolted into an A.R.T. chassis.
Hockett will face a sturdy field of challengers that includes Hooks, TX, ace Gary Wright, the only driver to top the East Bay event on more than one occasion. Wright, a four-time Lucas Oil Sprint Car National champion, topped the inaugural Kings event in 1999 before adding a second win in 2007.
Other past event winners include 2008 Lucas Oil Sprint Car champion Jason Johnson (2008), Terry McCarl (2006), Chad Kemenah (2005), Sport Allen (2003), Jason Sides (2002), Jeff Shepard (2001) and Ronald Laney (2000).
After last year’s East Bay opening night was rained out, Sarasota, Florida’s Danny Martin, Jr., topped the Friday night preliminary before chasing Hockett, Jason Sides and Gene Lasker to the stripe in the Saturday night finale.
That strong opening weekend performance launched a championship drive by “The Hammer”, as Martin, Jr., went on to become the third ASCS Rebel Region champion in as many years, outdistancing Jacksonville, Florida’s Matt Kurtz for the crown by 68 markers.
All three nights of competition at East Bay Raceway Park are slated to go green at approximately 7:15 p.m. A Wednesday night practice session will precede the weekend triple.
Tampa’s East Bay Raceway Park is located off I-75 Exit 250, then two miles west, then 1.2 miles north on US 41, then right 1.3 miles on Old US 41 to Burts Road. For more information, contact the track at 813-677-7223.
In its 19th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing, the American Sprint Car Series brings the best of Sprint Car racing to approximately 100 different tracks throughout 30 states and Canada. Anchored by the Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters, ASCS also consists of eleven different Regional Tours throughout the nation.

ROSEMONT COPPER “COPPER ON DIRT” THIS WEEKEND
Nobody has yet been able to grab a second checkered flag in USAC Sprint racing at USA Raceway in Tucson, Ariz. That could change this weekend when the Rosemont Copper “Copper on Dirt” unfolds at the 3.8-mile dirt oval.
Damion Gardner of Concord, Calif. takes an unblemished 2010 record to USA Raceway in Tucson, Ariz. this weekend for this year’s 4th Rosemont Copper “Copper on Dirt.” He led all 60 laps in winning the two 30-lap features comprising the “Bubba Army Sprint Nationals” at Tampa, Fla.’s East Bay Raceway Park last week.

around Johnson, but he held strong. At this point as the leaders were
trying to pass Freddie Rahmer, as he slowed on the track. With no-where to
go Shaffer would make contact with Rahmer, spinning the 51 car in Turn 4.
Johnson would also get into the spinning action and was sent to the tail.
and rookie Cap Henry in the top-five. On the restart McCarl would go low
trying to get around Shaffer in Turn1, but as the two running side-by-side,
exited Turn 2 the two would make contact as McCarl attempted to execute a
slide job on the 83 car. It ended both of their nights. At this point the
Red Flag came out for a fuel stop.
Hodnett, and Lance Dewease running in the top-five. When the green was
shown Dewease would get a jump sliding under Hodnett to pick up third. A
lap later another Red Flag would fly as Blaney flipped in Turn 2 after
making contact with the wall.
Smith battled for the position. Hodnett would get loose exiting Turn 2
allowing Stevie Smith to take the position, but Hodnett would battle back
as he put a slide job on Smith in Turn 4 to retake the position. With the
Checkered Flag waving in the cold Floridian night air, Mark Smith would
pick up the victory with Henry, Dewease, Hodnett and Stevie Smith rounding
out the top-five.
first All Star Winter Nationals Victory at East Bay Raceway Park. For
Rookie-of-the-Year contender Cap Henry this would be not only his best All

will be $32. On the final night of race action tickets can be purchased for
$30 and the pit passes will be $35. The track is offering a three-day

(Blaney) behind me. When you have him behind you, you know it is going to
be tough. I do not like win races this way, but we will take it. You can
move around on the track a lot here. There is a top and a bottom and it is
not that bad as long as everyone races smart and keeps their line. We did
not have the best car, but we are standing here up front.?
and this is just awesome. I really do not know what to say. It is my best
run in a 410 and to do it with the All Stars running for Rookie-of-the-Year
just makes it that much better. I wish we could have passed Mark, but I did
not want to be greedy. I was really just trying to hold my position and I
did not want to blow it trying to pass Mark. He was really quick the whole
race and I guess that is experience. I was just trying to hold on to
second, because it means a lot to us.?
the fittest. We made the A, and a lot of guys didn?t. We had a good
restart the last time, but I guarantee we will be faster tomorrow night. At
the beginning when we had all the yellow flags it seemed like every time we
got a good start the yellow came out. Then when we had our worst start it
stayed green. Our car was not the best, but it will be better tomorrow
night.?

Rebels Open 2010 ASCS Season with Florida Events
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (February 9, 2010) – The first of approximately 200 scheduled nights of American Sprint Car Series competition for 2010 is just around the corner, as the ASCS Rebel Region lifts the lid on another year of thrills with four nights of Florida action.
The ASCS Rebels tackle Clewiston, Florida’s Hendry County Motorsports Park for the first time on Saturday night, February 20, before moving on to Tampa’s East Bay Raceway Park for the 34th Annual Winter Nationals on February 25-27.
Following a Friday night, February 19, practice session at Hendry County, the ASCS Rebel Region kicks off the 2010 season the following night with the ASCS debut atop the semi-banked, 1/3-mile Hendry County Motorsports Park dirt oval.
Then, with opening night in the books, three full nights of ASCS Rebel Region competition atop Tampa’s semi-banked, 1/3-mile East Bay Raceway Park clay oval follow on Thursday through Saturday, February 25-27, culminating with Saturday’s $10,000-to-win Ninth Annual Ronald Laney Memorial.
While the ASCS Rebels will sling the Hendry County clay for the first time, Missouri’s Jesse Hockett reigns as the defending champion of East Bay’s “King of the 360’s” portion of the Winter Nationals, joining a prestigious list of past winners that includes Gary Wright (1999 and 2007), Jason Johnson (2008), Terry McCarl (2006), Chad Kemenah (2005), Sport Allen (2003), Jason Sides (2002), Jeff Shepard (2001) and Ronald Laney (2000).
“The Texan” Gary Wright, who recently became a grandfather to twin baby girls, ranks as the only driver to top the East Bay event on a pair of occasions with wins in the inaugural version of 1999 and then again in 2007, with the 2004 edition of the event falling victim to Mother Nature.
Hendry County Motorsports Park racing action goes green at 7:00 p.m., with each night of East Bay Raceway Park competition firing off at approximately 7:15 p.m.
Hendry County Motorsports Park is located west of Clewiston, FL, on SR 80, then 0.8 miles north on US 27, then 0.5 miles west. For more information, contact the track at 863-983-3478.
GARDNER DOMINATES “BUBBA ARMY SPRINT NATIONALS” OPENER
Gibsonton (Tampa), Fla…….Damion (The Demon) Gardner of Concord, Calif. took advantage of first-lap spins by both front-row starters Monday night and ended up leading all 30 laps of the 2010 Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series opener at East Bay Raceway Park. The “Bubba Army Sprint Nationals” continue Tuesday and Wednesday nights at the third-mile dirt oval. Gardner was slated to start fourth but a spin by rookie pole starter Ricky Williams on the first lap and a subsequent spin by outside-front row starter Shane Hmiel on the restart left Shane Cottle and Gardner lined up on the revised front row. Gardner fought off Cottle’s challenge to lead the first lap and stretched his lead in his Pace Lighting Eagle/Shaver to a full straightaway before the field bunched up under the yellow flag at lap 23. Gardner then pulled away in the closing laps to win the race over Bryan Clauson, fast qualifier Brady Short, Cottle and Jon Stanbrough. Defending series champion Levi Jones finished seventh after starting 14th. The finish left Gardner and Clauson tied for the series point lead after the opening race.

Saldana Sizzles at Volusia Speedway Park
From, allstarsprint.com
Camargo, IL (2-4-10) – By Kelly Brown –Public Relations Director –Tonight Saldana won his first race of the season in a convincing fashion after running second on the previous night at Volusia.
Starting on the front row of tonight’s feature event was Craig Dollansky and Greg Hodnett. When the green banner waved over the A-main, Hodnett quickly took the lead. Drag racing down the back stretch on the first lap Saldana was able to move up to second, after beginning his night in the fifth position, while Dollansky settled into third. It only took until the second revolution of the track for Saldana to take the lead in Turn 4. Hodnett would fight back in the low line, while Saldana stayed high. For about three laps the two traded the lead in about every corner, but Saldana was able to establish himself in the lead.
While the top two were battling, Dollansky was being pursued by Donny Schatz as the two fought for third. Dollansky would get the edge, and Schatz would fall into the clutches of Steve Kinser. Kinser would get around Schatz for fourth momentarily. The two then ran wheel-to-wheel for a lap, but Schatz got the edge retaking the fourth position. Just as Saldana and Hodnett were running side-by-side in traffic, the first caution flag of the night came out on Lap 8. It was for Doug Esh who has slowed in Turn 1 with a flat tire.
On the restart, the track did not stay green for long. One lap was recorded before Hodnett who was running second at the time slowed with a flat left rear tire. When racing resumed, it would be Saldana, Dollansky, Kinser, Lasoski and Schatz lining up in the top-five. The Green Flag would fly again, but almost instantly the track went yellow as Schatz slowed with a flat right rear and a missing right front tire.
When the Green Flag flew, Saldana would favor the high side and stretch out his lead using his chosen high line. At the halfway point of tonight’s race the leader began to encounter traffic again. Dollansky began to close on the number 9 Budweiser car, but on Lap 17 the Yellow Flag would fly again as Esh came to a stop on the course. At this point there had been so many laps run under caution, the officials of the O’Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions decided to unveil the Red Flag for a fuel stop.
On the restart both Lucas Wolfe and Sam Hafertepe Jr. were on the move as both got past Lasoski to pick up the fourth and fifth positions on the track. At the front Saldana was stretching his lead out again, but it was erased with another Yellow Flag with eight laps to go. Lance Dewease slowed on the track with a flat tire and was unable to make it to the pit area.
The next time the Green Flag was unveiled, Kinser would reel in Dollansky for second, but their battle had to be put on hold when the final caution of the night came out on Lap 26 when Jac Haudenschild had a flat tire. When the field restarted Saldana held on tight to the lead leaving Dollansky and Kinser to continue their skirmish. As Kinser ran low and Dollansky ran high, Wolfe caught the two and joined the battle.
With the Checkered Flag in the air, Saldana picked up his first win of the 2010 season and his seventh win overall at Volusia. Behind him it would be Dollansky holding on to second, while Kinser would cross the line in third, with Wolf and Hafertepe rounding out the top-five.
One of the hardest chargers of tonight was Tim Kaeding who started the race on the tail of the field after having a fuel leak prior to the Green Flag. He was able to climb all the way to ninth before the end of the race.
Carrying the banner for the All Stars was Dale Blaney who turned in another remarkable race. After starting twenty-second he was able to pick up twelve spots to finish tenth.
Next up for the All Star Circuit of Champions is East Bay Raceway Park. On Thursday, February 11th the tickets will run $20, with pit passes running $30. Then on Friday night admission will be $25 and pit passes will be $32. On the final night of race action tickets can be purchased for $30 and the pit passes will be $35. The track is offering a three-day general admission race package, which will run $70.
Top Three Quotes
Winner Joey Saldana – “We had a really good car all night. We got the bottom working for us in the heat race, so once we got into the feature that is how we got the lead. It was like a light switch went on. That is also how Hodnett got a run on me, but I was probably being too cautious with the lapped cars. It was really easy to get your car in trouble the way the cushion was. My car was good, but I did not want to do anything stupid in our second race of the season. I usually go to Australia to race, but this year I stayed home with my family and got to spend Christmas with my son. It was pretty cool. I was worried once we got down here we would be behind, but so far my guys have done a flawless job and it feels like I have been racing all winter.”
Second Place Craig Dollansky – “We did not get a good start there. These Goodyear Tires are pretty good tires, and we decided to go for a harder one tonight. It seemed it took awhile to get going, but we had a really good race car especially with Greg and Joey in lapped traffic about ten laps in. I got into a lapped car and bent the left side of the front wing and the left sideboard fell off. At that point I knew it would be difficult to deal with, but the car was not real bad. We were able to hang with Joey, so congratulations to them. We just fell one spot short unfortunately.”
Third Place Steve Kinser – “The only chance I had was to get into lapped traffic. We could run the bottom decent enough, but not decent enough to keep up. I was a little tight at the top. Joey and Craig seemed to get through the rough stuff at the top. In the traffic I felt I could move around a little bit better. We had a good run we started ninth and finished third which speaks to the caliber of car we have here.”

THE DEMON’s SORCERY LIKELY TO CONTINUE AT THE “COPPER ON DIRT”
From USACracing.com
After ending the 2009 season with a west coast reign of fire, The “Demon” Damion Gardner will start his 2010 rampage of the Sprint Car world as he aims for USA Raceway’s 4th Annual “Copper on Dirt”.
The Concord, Calif. native will again head west with the same Pace Lighting/Eagle Chassis/Shaver powered ride that took him to his 2009 Oval Nationals triumph along with several top five finishes in the fall of last year. Seemingly on a hot streak, The “Demon” is optimistic on his return to the west coast and will very likely be a force to contend with in 2010.
With more than 60 career victories to his credit, Gardner and his relentless driving style is always a threat. After dominating the west coast USAC/CRA Series, Gardner moved east to take on the best in and around Indiana and across the United States racking up notable victories at several venues including the 2008 Chili Bowl and the 2009 Oval Nationals. Gardner comes into the 4th Annual “Copper on Dirt” with some experience at USA Raceway as he captured a USAC/CRA win in 2006 and has finished 5 out 6 races in the top five at the Tucson facility.
“I am looking forward to getting the 2010 season going,” commented Gardner. “I always look forward to coming out west and racing and hopefully we carry on the success that we ended with in 2010.”
The 4th Annual “Copper on Dirt” featuring USAC Silver Crown, USAC National/CRA Sprint Cars and USAC National/Western States Midgets all taking part in a sensational racing spectacle at Tucson’s USA Raceway’s for two nights on February 19th and 20th marking USA Raceway as one of only two dirt track venues to host USAC’s Triple Crown all in one event.
As the 2010 racing season goes into full swing, USAC championship hopefuls will make their way west to start the year off at one of the premier events of the season. More than a hundred of the nations top open wheel teams are anticipated to take part in the 4th Annual “Copper on Dirt” making this a must see event of 2010.
Ticket pricing, seating charts and purchasing information can be found online at http://www.usaraceway.net/Uploads/CopperOnDirtTicketForm.pdf or by calling the USA Raceway office at 520-574-8515.

Mississippi’s Ricky Stenhouse became the first and only driver to win multiple “Copper on Dirt” features in a single year. Stenhouse set the bar high at the inaugural “Copper on Dirt” by winning back to back races in the 40-lap sprint car feature and finishing off the night by capturing the 50-lap USAC Silver Crown Feature.
California native, Darren Hagen, is the only other driver to win in two divisions with a midget victory in 2008 and a sprint car win in 2009. Hagen will lead the USAC trio into Tucson as the defending “Copper on Dirt” Sprint Car Champion while Brad Sweet and Bud Kaeding will likely set out to defend the USAC Midget and Silver Crown titles respectively. Hagen also leads the “Copper on Dirt” stats with 8 of 9 feature starts (Did not participate in 2007 Silver Crown portion) and an average finish of 5th in 8 total events.

Dollansky Victorious at Volusia
From, allstarsprint.com
Camargo, IL – By Kelly Brown –Public Relations Director – Entering tonight’s event there were a lot of unknowns for Craig Dollansky. He was beginning the 2010 season with a new team, car, and even the Goodyear Tires on his car were new to him. Some drivers may be daunted by a scenario like this, but Dollansky adapted very quickly as he picked up the victory in O’Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions action at Volusia Speedway Park.
After setting quick time, Dollansky would begin the night on the pole position with Jason Sides to his right. On the drop of the Green Flag Dollansky would take the lead on Lap 1 coming out of the second turn. Behind him Joey Saldana was on the move as he picked up four positions, moving from his eighth place starting position to fourth in just one circuit of the track. When the dust settled after the first lap the top-five were Dollansky, Sides, Lucas Wolfe, Saldana and Donny Schatz.
Tonight the track was lightening quick, which made it difficult to pass . On Lap 5, Dollansky would first encounter traffic for the first time which gave Sides an opportunity to close in. The following lap Dollansky was having trouble getting around lapped traffic, which allowed Wolfe to catch the top-two and battle for the top spot. It also allowed Saldana to sneak up on the top-three and steal third from Wolfe.
At this point Saldana was all over Sides for the second position, while Dollansky stretched out his lead. At the half way point the top five were Dollansky, Sides, Saldana, Schatz, and Wolfe. Just one lap later the first caution flag of the race would fly for Doug Esh, who came to a stop in Turn 3.
On the restart, Steve Kinser was on the move as he moved his way into the top-five and began pursing his teammate. One of the best battles on the track was between Saldana and Schatz as they sized each other up. When the leaders started to encounter traffic again, Sides was closing in on Dollansky. On Lap 24, Sides caught Dollansky and got on the outside in Turn 1. The duo would run nose-to-tail down the back stretch. On the 26 circuit of the course Sides would beat Dollansky to the line and take the lead.
Two laps later disaster would strike for Sides as first sparks were reported over the radio, then his racecar slowed and came to a stop high in Turn 3 with rear end damage. On the drop of the green Dollansky set sail, while Saldana and Schatz battled, but just before Dollansky could take the checkered flag the Red Flag flew for Tim Kaeding who had flipped exiting Turn 2. This set up a second Green, White, Checkered situation. On this restart, Dollansky powered into the first turn leaving Saldana and Schatz to decide second. When the Checkered Flag flew it would be Dollansky picking up the win with Saldana, Schatz, Kinser, and Stevie Smith just eking his way into the top-five at the end.
Tonight Dollansky collected his sixth career All Star win and his first in All Star Winter Nationals action since 2001 when he won at Volusia. Overall it was the third time in his career that he celebrated a 410 sprint car win in Victory Lane at Volusia.
Next up is a second night of thrilling racing action at Volusia Speedway Park. Thursday, February 4th General Admission for the event is $29 with a Pit Pass running $40. Reserved seats can be purchased on race day for $2 more per seat. This year Volusia is extending a one of a kind chance to get close to the racing action to fans, as they will have unprecedented access throughout the racing program. Every ticket purchased is a FREE Fan Pit Pass. All fans have to do is show their grandstand ticket and sign in to at a table near the pit entrance, and they will be free to visit the pit area at any time during the course of the race night to see the best sprint car drivers in the world, their cars and their crews hard at work. For tickets and more information visit: www.DIRTcarNationals.com or call Volusia Speedway Park at 386-985-4402.

Top Three Quotes
Winner Craig Dollansky – “It was a great team effort with my brand new race team. It is always a team effort when you make it to Victory Lane. I could not be happier for everyone involved. This was our first night running on the Goodyear Tires. Some other teams have tested, but we did not, so we are pretty happy that we could win on our first night with them. It is a great win for everyone who stands behind this team. We have a great support system.”
Second Place Joey Saldana – “We had a great car and it was really great in lapped traffic. We could really move around. We had a good start, but with an open track like that it is hard to make up any ground especially on a guy like Craig. Put a guy like that up front it is hard to pass them unless lapped traffic comes into play. If we had been in lapped traffic, I think we would have been good enough to win. We have quality cars. I started eighth, so I will take a second and come back tomorrow.”
Third Place Donny Schatz – “The track was so fast on the restart is about the only time you had a chance to pass unless someone makes a mistake. Some nights you have to deal with that. We had a decent race car, but there were a lot of decent racecars out there tonight. I wish we could have stayed in traffic a little longer. That is where races are won and lost. We saw Jason Sides sneak by in it. We have five more nights of racing to go, so we will keep on plugging away.”

Lucas Oil Sprint Bandits TNT 2010 Schedule Revealed
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (February 2, 2010) – For the sixth consecutive year, the Lucas Oil Sprint Bandits Tour ‘N Topless series will once again offer up some of the nation’s premier wingless Sprint Car racing action.
And, this year’s edition of TNT will include a bit more than the annual August swing through the heartland, with another half dozen events on the series’ 2010 slate.
The 2010 edition of Lucas Oil Sprint Bandits TNT will kick off with a Texas triple at Beaumont’s Golden Triangle Raceway Park, Baytown’s Houston Raceway Park and then Waco’s Heart O’ Texas Speedway on April 30, May 1 and May 2.
The following weekend, TNT ignites atop the famed Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, TX, on May 7 before tackling the high-banked, ¼-mile I-30 Speedway red clay oval the following night.
After a stop at the “Diamond of Dirt Tracks”, Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO, on June 19, next up is the Sixth Annual Lucas Oil Sprint Bandits Tour ‘N Topless Midwest Swing.
The sixth annual August slate of events opens up on Sunday night, August 15, at Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, IA, where the series initial attempt was rained out last year.
From there, it’s on to Nebraska Raceway Park’s I-80 Speedway on Monday night, before taking to Missouri’s ½-mile Sedalia State Fair Speedway on Tuesday night.
After an off night, the series shifts to the cozy confines of Sapulpa, Oklahoma’s Creek County Speedway on Thursday night, August 19, before finishing out the week with the annual $10,000 to win Ron Shuman Classic at Kansas City’s Lakeside Speedway on August 20-21.
