“CLASSIC” SPRINTS HEAD FOR IRWINDALE SATURDAY

BY DICK JORDAN
Tony Hunt of Lincoln, Calif. will resume his quest for a sixth and seventh USAC driving championship this Saturday when the AMSOIL USAC Western/Western Classic Sprint Cars visit Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, Calif.

Hunt is two points ahead of Audra Sasselli in the AMSOIL Western standings and eight points better than Geoff Ensign in the Western Classic points. A total of 74 points are available at Irwindale, which means the top-five Western and top three Western Classic drivers all have a shot at the point lead this weekend.

Hunt garnered his initial Irwindale Sprint win in 2001 and added two more in 2006. Kody Swanson won last November’s USAC Sprint race at Irwindale, beating Hunt to the checkered flag as Hunt iced his fourth Western Sprint Car championship. Added to his Regional Sprint and Russell Pro crowns, that makes him only one of seven drivers in USAC history to amass a half-dozen driving titles. Two more would put him in rarified territory, matching Mel Kenyon’s eight titles. Only A.J. Foyt (13), Rich Vogler and Sleepy Tripp (9 each) would have more.

SANTOS LEADS PAVEMENT SPRINTS TO INDY;
LARSON TAKES OSKALOOSA’S “ONE NIGHT STAND FOR $15 GRAND!”
HINES WINS 2 AT DODGE CITY; STANBROUGH 1ST AT GRAIN VALLEY

by DICK JORDAN
Bobby Santos III of Franklin, Mass. will lead USAC’s Pavement Sprint Car Series to Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, Ind. this Thursday night, but his point lead is tenuous at best. He sits just one point ahead of Bobby East and two ahead of Tanner Swanson entering the ”Thursday Night Thunder” event on the .686-mile paved oval.

Levi Jones of Olney, Ill. continues hang on to a slim point lead in USAC’s AMSOIL National Sprint Car Series after last week’s four races in the nation’s heartland. He is 19 points ahead of Chris Windom and 38 ahead of Jon Stanbrough heading into a September 10 date at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track. Jones posted a pair of thirds and a fourth in last week’s action.

Stanbrough, of Avon, Ind. won Sunday night’s 30-lap AMSOIL USAC National Sprint race at Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Mo. Taking the lead from Brady Bacon on lap 10 in traffic, Stanbrough held off late-race challenges from Robert Ballou to take the victory in the Jarvis Enterprises/Fatheadz Eyewear DRC/Foxco. Ballou took second ahead of Jones, Hud Cone and Blake Fitzpatrick as Bacon, who led the first 10 laps, faded to sixth at the end.

Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind. racked up Friday and Saturday night 30-lap wins at Dodge City (Kans.) Raceway Park in his MP Environmental/Turbines, Inc. DRC/Shaver. The wins brought his all-time USAC National feature victory total to 76. He scored his first USAC National feature win of the season and the 75th of his USAC career Friday night at Dodge City, leading the first lap and last six laps at the 3/8-mile dirt oval. Hines was followed at the checkered flag by Stanbrough, Jones, Windom and Hud Cone, who led 23 laps of the race. Hines added a similar victory in Saturday night’s 30-lapper at Dodge City. He grabbed the lead on lap 24 from Ballou, who then flipped on the following lap and Hines officially led the final seven laps. Windom finished second ahead of Stanbrough, Jones and Dave Darland.

Kyle Larson of Elk Grove, Calif. made his debut in the Dynamics, Inc. Mean Green/Mopar Chalk memorable last Tuesday night, winning race organizer Terry McCarl’s Casey’s General Stores “Ultimate Challenge” at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa. Larson’s victory in the race presented by Don Lang’s Searsboro Telephone Company earned his team a check for $15,000 and the win was Larson’s first in the AMSOIL National Sprint Series and the Hoffman Auto Racing Team’s record 77th. Larson led the first 13 laps, then Bacon went to the front for three laps before Dustin Morgan flipped, bringing out the race’s second red flag. On the restart, Larson outduelled Bacon for the lead and led the final 14 laps for the historic win. Bacon finished second ahead of Darland, Shane Cottle and Jerry Coons Jr.

"LITTLE 500"
by aXe

After about 50 years of reading about the Little 500 I finaly got to see one. Thanks to the Rain Gods it was rained out sat and moved to sun lucky for us.
The Top 3 Qualifiers Pierce Tyler and Olson

We missed all the preliminary stuff, Which included a New all time track record under 11 seconds,4 cars broke that one. And that helped make for the fastest field in the 63 year history of the race.
The Track record is now Held by Aaron Pierce at 10.8 seconds

It has been close to fifty years since I last saw 500 laps on a short track. This didnt compare to that BCRA midget race back in the late 50s. They didnt have half a field of competitive cars,This one had most of them in it that were highly competitive.

All 33 Cars Ready to go!  3rd quick on left was Brian Olson on then Brian Tyler and New Track record holder Aaron Pierce

It was a fairly trouble free event. Although one did several barrel rolls just past the start and finish line, The race was red-flagged on lap 51 when Tom Paterson hopped the wheel of another car on the front straight and flipped several times before landing wheels down in the turn one infield. He emerged ok.
ChrisWindom had to overcome a penalty for passing the pace car late in the race, but things fell his way over the final 50 laps.

After around 2.5 HRS OF 33 cars Racing the winner was Chris Windom

Who hung around the top ten most of the race then struck with just 5 laps or so to go, Going by Eric Gordon Who looked to be thinking Windom was laps down?
                                                                         Winning car of Windoms

Windoms winning cars nose ready to devour the compettion

Gordon & Chet Phillips Were lap leaders for most of the race.

Phillips from Texas had a very radical car with 4 wheel independent suspension and lots of other neat looking things on it.

Gordon seemed to be on rails most of the race but when the top line was plugged up He couldnt run the bottom very well.
Jeff Bloom, had been in the starting field for 29 consecutive races and 35 overall,

He battled an ill-handling race car on during first day qualifying and during his first attempt on Friday.
Determined to make his 35th start, Bloom then climbed into a back-up car provided by Jacob Wilson’s team for a final try, rolling to the qualifying line with 30-seconds remaining.
Bloom then ran three laps without a transponder to record his lap times and was given one final run. He then ran four laps at 78.4 mph and will start 29th.

It was a beautiful evening with a good crowd. I just may try to make another one next year? But the night before the 500 midget race at Indys Raceway park is very hard to beat. They both run the same night every year.
