Ross Rankine Seeks Second Championship With Nine Racing

by Meredith Kaplan Burns
Nine Racing Inc. / Performance Racing Industry

Brownsburg, Indiana — 2011 USAC Midwest Focus Midget Pavement Champion Ross Rankine, of Brownsburg, Indiana, will rejoin the Nine Racing team for the 2012 season. Ross will return in the #9 Focus Midget as he sets his sights on earning a consecutive championship in the USAC Midwest Focus Midget Pavement Series beginning in March for a two-day event at North Carolina’s Ace Speedway.

Finishing the 2011 race season strong by winning the Focus Midget portion of the 71st running of the Turkey Night Grand Prix, along with winning the USAC Midwest Focus Pavement Championship and finishing second in points in the USAC National Focus Pavement Championship

In 2011, Ross drove the #9 Focus Midget of Nine Racing as he won three races and earned eight podium appearances in 12 events to claim the USAC Midwest Focus Midget Pavement Series Championship. He also won the Focus Midget portion of the 71st running of the Turkey Night Grand Prix, on Thanksgiving, 2011, and finished second overall in the USAC National Focus Pavement Championship.

Fifteen-year-old Ross is already clear about his goal for this season. “I would love to win consecutive USAC Midwest Focus Midget Championships,” he said. “I am also very excited to have the opportunity to win the Turkey Night Grand Prix for a second year in a row.”

Fifteen-year-old Ross Rankine will compete in the #9 Focus Midget of Nine Racing this season as he seeks his and the team’s consecutive USAC Midwest Focus Pavement Championship.

Ross understands the importance of working with a solid team and keeping the same personnel to continue successful results. “I can’t wait to work with Glenn Martin and Krieg Polland of Nine Racing for another year. It will give us a huge advantage coming into 2012 with our past experience with each other. Glenn, Krieg, my dad Eric and I all work very well together. We communicate well, too, which is a big advantage in motorsports,” added Ross.

Ross also has some expanded race plans for this season. “I am very excited to announce that I will be making my midget debut in one of the Nine Racing midgets toward the end of the 2012 season at one of the USAC regional midget pavement events when Glenn and my father think the time is right,” he concluded.

“We are very excited to have Ross back this season for another campaign on the USAC Ford Focus Series,” said Steve Lewis, Nine Racing team owner. “Ross has developed quickly and I know that he will continue to work hard to improve. I look forward to watching him take the next step when he will move into one of our midgets late in the season to run in selected USAC regional midget events.”

Ross had a spectacular 2011 season and is now poised and ready for the challenge of preparing for this year’s competitive USAC Midwest Focus Midget Pavement Series. As a result of his success and the prospect for another strong season, a number of new sponsors have come on board. And there is still opportunity for additional sponsors to become involved to perpetuate Ross’s Focus and USAC pavement midget program, and to even extend his racing endeavors into the USAC dirt midget series.

Ross Rankine’s current sponsor lineup for 2012 includes National Pride Equipment, Eibach Springs, MPD, Bell Helmets, Colors by Barr, and 4 Paws Pet Wash.

Nine Racing’s 2012 sponsor lineup includes K&N Engineering, Eibach Springs, Weld Racing, Klotz Synthetic Lubricants, Penske Racing Shocks, Performance Friction Brakes, ASE, Earl’s Performance Plumbing, SSi Decals, PJ1, and Hoosier Racing Tire.

Dillon Welch Hosts Open House At Nine Racing Facility

by Meredith Kaplan Burns
Nine Racing Inc. / Performance Racing Industry
Brownsburg, Indiana (January 27, 2012) — Fun, food and philanthropy were the themes as race car driver Dillon Welch hosted an “open house” at the Nine Racing midget team facility in Brownsburg, Indiana, on Wednesday evening, January 25, 2012.

A crowd of over 200 people visited the Nine Racing team facility in Brownsburg, Indiana, on Wednesday, January 25, as driver Dillon Welch hosted an open house to family, friends and sponsors.

More than 200 people toured the race shop, walked through the haulers and got up close with the race cars. Some even squeezed into the seat normally occupied by the 18-year-old Welch.
Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse catered the event.

“It was a great opportunity for friends, family, sponsors, and prospective sponsors to get a closer look at our racing program,” Dillon Welch said. “Everyone was very impressed and they really enjoyed the opportunity to see firsthand how all the cars are prepared and all that goes on behind the scenes in the Nine Racing facility.”

Dillon Welch describes what it is like to drive a midget race car to fans who attended his open house at the Nine Racing team shop

The open house evening also featured a pair of special announcements, including a check presentation by Dillon Welch to the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Indiana.

Dillon Welch presented a check for $3,109.94 to the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Indiana at his open house on Wednesday, January 25, at the Nine Racing facility, in Brownsburg, Indiana. He raised the money last summer during a bowling tournament that he organized.

Additionally, Welch announced a partnership with Sheltering Wings, a central-Indiana facility that provides a safe haven for women and children who are victims of domestic abuse.
“Racing for Wings is an educational program we’ve designed emphasizing the signs and dangers of bullying and date violence,” Dillon said. “It’s another opportunity for me to use my platform as a race car driver to make a positive impact in the community.”
Winning races and making a difference in the community are Dillon’s two primary goals. He took some steps toward accomplishing those goals Wednesday night.
Dillon Welch will soon climb back into his #9 pearl white midget when the USAC National Midget Pavement Series opens the 2012 season with a two-day event at Ace Speedway in North Carolina, March 30–31.
Dillon’s sponsors include St. Vincent Sports Performance, Leisure Sports Inc., Z-Line Designs, Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, Row Printing, CASE Design/Remodeling, Validated Custom Solutions and BioStorage Technologies.
Nine Racing’s 2012 sponsor lineup includes K&N Engineering, Eibach Springs, Weld Racing, Klotz Synthetic Lubricants, Penske Racing Shocks, Performance Friction Brakes, ASE, Earl’s Performance Plumbing, SSi Decals, PJ1, and Hoosier Racing Tire.

Taylor Ferns to Drive for Team 6R in USAC Silver Crown Pvmnt Events in 2012

By Ferns Racing PR
Shelby Township, Mich. — January 24, 2012 —Taylor Ferns, the reigning USAC D1 Midget Series champion, will compete in all four of the Traxxas USAC Silver Crown Series races on pavement in 2012 for Team 6R in a Toyota-powered Beast.
“I’m really excited to join Team 6R,” said Ferns. “It’s a great accomplishment for me to be able to drive for a team like that. I look up to Kody (Swanson) and all of the drivers on the team and look forward to working with them and learning from them.”
Team 6R, owned by Darryl Guiducci, is the winningest team in USAC Silver Crown Series history. Jack Hewitt, Jim Keeker, Dave Steele, Kody Swanson and Brian Tyler have all recorded wins over the last 20-plus years for Team 6R. The team was created in 1988, and has over 50 total wins in USAC Silver Crown, Midget and Sprint Car competition.
“We’re really excited to have Taylor with us,” said Guiducci. “We were fortunate enough to do a test with her last year at Indianapolis Raceway Park. She handled herself very professionally and did everything she was asked to, and turned some pretty good times as well. We’re looking to help the Silver Crown Series grow and she’s a perfect asset to it.”
Ferns, the winningest female in USAC history, was victorious last season at the Indianapolis Speedrome en route to claiming the USAC D1 Midget Series title. In 16 main events with the series, the native of Shelby Township, Mich. finished in the Top-10 in each and every start.
On the pavement in 2011, the high school sophomore made 12 starts with the series, recording an average finish of 6.2. Ferns also made five starts in a sprint car on pavement last year at Spartan Speedway in her home state of Michigan, picking up five Top-Five finishes.
“When I started racing, it was on the pavement, so I have a lot of laps on it,” said Ferns. “I enjoy racing on both pavement and the dirt. I guess I am more used to pavement, and a lot of what I have learned racing on pavement has helped me on dirt as well.”
The 2012 Traxxas USAC Silver Crown Series opens on May 19 at Lucas Oil Raceway in Clermont, Ind. with the inaugural “Hall of Fame Classic.” Ferns will compete in that event, along with the June 22 race at Iowa Speedway, the June 29 contest at Toledo Speedway in Ohio and the July 27 event at Lucas Oil Raceway.
“I had a great time testing the Silver Crown car last year,” shared Ferns. “I really like those cars. They are a lot bigger than a midget and when you are driving them, things happen a lot slower, but you are going so fast in them. I adjusted to the car pretty well testing and I can’t wait to race one.”
Last season Team 6R racked up a combined 14 Top-10 finishes with the Kody Swanson, Tanner Swanson and Brian Tyler behind the wheel. Kody Swanson was victorious twice on the pavement at Lucas Oil Raceway, as well as Toledo Speedway, while Tyler won the dirt at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Ill.

McQueen Racing Opens 2012 With Solid Chili Bowl Performance's
Header From Shannon McQueen's web site
By Robert Haugh
Competing against the World’s best racers over five days January 10 through 14, with approximately 260 racers competing, including reigning and three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion and two-time Chili Bowl winner Tony Stewart, reigning NASCAR Nationwide Series champion Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Sprint Car icon and five-time Chili Bowl winner Sammy Swindell, reigning two-time champion Kevin Swindell and a plethora of the most talented racers from an array of racing backgrounds and disciplines, McQueen Racing didn’t capture the coveted Golden Driller Trophy at the 26th Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals, but they were not alone of the 259 entries.
Having completed a stellar 2011 racing season, McQueen Racing opened the 2012 racing season with a strong, efficient, performance at the 26th Annual Lucas Tulsa, Oklahoma at the QuikTrip Center’s 1/5-mile Tulsa Expo Raceway, January 10-14.

With all three of the team’s entries making it into the upper half of Saturday’s finale, which began with a K-Main, double J-Mains up through Double B-Mains, leading into the 55-lap A-Main, McQueen Racing didn’t take a Golden Driller home, but performed admirably against the best of the best on one of the trickiest tracks to race on.
For the first-time, McQueen Racing’s Chili Bowl three-car team was an all-female roster, consisting of Bakersfield, California’s Shannon McQueen, Guthrie, Oklahoma’s Michelle Decker and Lindsay, Oklahoma’s Harli White, a 16-year-old Chili Bowl rookie.
White, a Chili Bowl rookie, chauffeured the McQueen Racing #7W American Waste Control, Waurika Truck & Tire, Quantum Consulting, K&N Filters, Eibach Springs Spike/Esslinger in Wednesday’s River Spirit Casino preliminary qualifying night.
After starting second in her Heat, alongside NASCAR and Chili Bowl veteran Jason Leffler in her Heat, Harli was beat to the first corner, following Leffler closely to finish second. In her A-Qualifier she was roughed up, falling backwards, ending up in the B-Main. With little passing opportunities on a difficult track, Harli missed transferring to the A-Main.
Decker, piloting the Shannon McQueen #7D Waurika Truck & Tire, Carter Custom Finishes, Starrship Trucking, Simpson Race Products, Quantum Consulting Spike/Esslinger competed on Thursday’s Suburban Chevrolet preliminary qualifying night.
Decker started last in her Heat race due to drawing a 79 pill. Struggling to find grip on a poor track, Decker was marred in inexperienced traffic in the B-Main, missing the transfer to the A-Main.
McQueen, the team owner, manned the Shannon McQueen #7 Murf Dogg Racing, R.C. 4 Less, American Waste Control, Simpson Race Products, K&N Filters Spike/Esslinger on Friday’s Vacuworx International preliminary qualifying night.
Keeping the streak of high pill draws, McQueen drew the fourth highest pill. With a narrow, fast track, McQueen jumped from seventh to fifth on the opening lap and was setting up to pass for fourth when the fourth place car spun in front of her, dropping McQueen to the rear with only two laps remaining in the Heat. McQueen fought back to claim sixth in the heat.
One spot shy of automatically qualifying for the A-Qualifier races, McQueen had to race in the C-Main, where she ran third, transferring to the B-Main, where she stormed from 18th to sixth, missing the A-Main transfer by just two spots.
After competing in qualifying night action, all three Lady racers competed in Saturday’s Chili Bowl final night, which started with a K-Main.
Though driving with a heavy heart, Harli showed poise, remaining confident and running with the best, with most everyone at the Chili Bowl was mourning the loss of popular Oklahoma racer and close friend of the White family Donnie Ray Crawford, who lost his life in a tragic non-racing incident on Saturday morning.
Originally getting a solid start in G-Main 1, running from 12th to sixth, Harli fell backwards halfway through the feature and did not transfer to F-Main 1.
Decker started on the pole, and despite strong challenges, led every lap of G-Main 2, hugging the bottom and transferring to F-Main 2 with the win in G-Main 2. Unfortunately, Decker got upside down on lap 2 in F-Main 2, as another car moved from the bottom swiftly, causing her to flip on the front stretch as she had nowhere to go.
McQueen quickly moved from her eighth starting spot E-Main 2 to a potential transfer position in fourth before getting shuffled back to eighth while fighting a rapidly changing track, missing the transfer by only two positions.
McQueen Racing sponsors include K&N Filters, Lucas Oil Products, Simpson Race Products, Eibach Springs, American Fabrication of Bakersfield, Advanced Racing Suspensions, Ruth Engineering, West Evans Motorsports, Esslinger Racing Engines by Duane McQueen and JE Piston Company.
Additional 2012 Chili Bowl Sponsors include:  American Waste Control, MurfDogg Racing/Motorworks, R/C 4 Less, Carter Custom Finishes, Quantum Consulting, Waurika Truck and Tires, Starrship Trucking, Dale’s Electric and Mud-X.

NEVERLIFT MOTORSPORTS CHILI BOWL 2012 RECAP
 by Robert Haugh
The 2012 Chili Bowl has come to an end and all the teams are back home reflecting on the weeks events. Neverlift Motorsports in Fresno, CA is no different. Team owner and driver David Prickett(15p) is happy to say the week went very well. The team was represented by 3 cars this year, with drivers Connor Kassik(15k) and  TJ Smith(15n) joining in the representation of the black and silver team.

                                                                                                TJ Smith(15n)
TJ was up first on Tuesday nights qualifier, drawing a 7 pill and starting on the pole of his heat. At the green, the outside car got the jump dropping TJ to 2nd, but TJ was much faster and charged hard on the leader for several laps before Jerry Coons Jr. joined the fray from 3rd. On lap 6 of 8, Jerry moved past TJ and TJ would finish 3rd. This set TJ 32nd in points of the 76 qualifiers, lining him up in a qualifying race. Unfortunately, another car spun directly in front of TJ in the opening laps and TJ could not avoid, suffering a bent front axle and ending hopes of transfering directly into the A feature. The team got the car fixed and TJ began the B feature near the rear. It was looking good for the 15n as TJ passed 6 cars in 4 laps sitting in 6th when another car ran into his left rear tire causing a flat and ending his night. TJ would start Saturday in an H main.

                                                                                          David Prickett(15p)
David was up next on Wednesday, and the day did not start well, with the 15p suffering a broken rocker shaft in hot laps. The Neverlift Motorsports team, with help from Johnny Murdock and Matt Streeter, was able to get repairs made and David started 5th in his heat. In the first 3 laps David moved up to 3rd where he would stay to the finish. This would line David up 17th in points, outside the front row of his qualifier. At the start, pole sitter Matt Streeter would lead the way and at the end of the 1st lap, David would fall to 3rd. But that wouldn't last long as David found his groove on the high line and would take the lead on lap 3 never looking back. The only other car David saw this event was 5 time Chili Bowl Champion Sammy Swindell, who would have to settle for 2nd. David was now 7th in points and would start inside the 4th row in his first A feature. Track changes and a very fast main had the team a little off, and David would fall to 19th, setting him up in a D main for Saturday.

                                                                                            Connor Kassik(15k)
Connor was last to qualify on Thursday and it was a rough night for the 15k. Connor pulled an 11 pill and would start outside row 1 of the heat race. The opening lap the pole sitter spun in front of Connor causing him to stop and relegating him to the rear. While battling back to the front, contact with another car would cut a tire, sending Connor to a C main. After starting 11th and moving to 6th in the C, Connor made hard contact with the front straight wall sending the car airborne, and consiquently ending his Chili Bowl with unrepairable damage.
Championship night showed TJ starting from outside the front row of the H main and TJ immediately jumped to the lead. Several late race cautions caught the field back up, and TJ lost the lead to Matt Westfall at the white and would finish 3rd at the checkers, still transfering to the G main. TJ would start at the rear and moved up to 12th where he would finish.
David started outside row 2 of the D main, taking the lead for a brief moment on lap 3. A long caution allowed David too much time for cockpit adjustments and David dialed himself right out of the transfer spot to finish 10th. Davids best prior finish was 15th in a D main in 2009.
Neverlift Motorsports would like to thank its sponsors Crysalli Artesian Water, Pricketts Distributing, Fruitful Juice Company, David Prickett Racing, C&C Custom Design, Elite Powder Coating and Neverlift Racing, as well as all our supporters AFCO, Hoosier Tire, Hoosier West Parts and Service, West Evans Motorsports, Wilwood, K&N and MPD Racing. Special thanks to Scott Pierovich, Lonnie Lopez, Derek Riedel, Dan Kassik, Tyler Dolacki, Russ Prickett and Moose Lacy

Brownsburg, Indiana (January 18, 2012) — Kyle Steffens, of St. Charles, Missouri, made his Nine Racing team debut in the #91X at last week’s 26th Annual Chili Bowl Midget Nationals at the QuikTrip Center’s Tulsa Expo Raceway, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Kyle began the 2012 Chili Bowl event by winning his heat race on Thursday, January 12. He finished 8th in the A Qualifier 3, and then finished 6th in the B Main. Unfortunately, the top four transferred to the A Main, so he missed moving up to the A Main by two places.
On Saturday, January 14, Kyle drove the Nine Racing #91X in the E Main 2, but ended up finishing the event in 15th place as the top four transferred to the D Main.
After the conclusion of the Chili Bowl Nationals, Kyle said, “I’m bummed that the Chili Bowl is over, but happy to have new opportunities for 2012 in an open wheel car. Thanks to the entire Nine Racing team.”

Brownsburg, Indiana (January 18, 2012) — After a strong performance at the 22nd Chili Bowl Nationals in 2008, where he battled through a number of races to reach Saturday’s A Main, Billy Wease jumped into the #19X of Nine Racing and returned to the 26th Annual Chili Bowl Nationals last week.
The five-day midget racing event drew over 260 entries to the Tulsa, Oklahoma, QuikTrip Center’s Tulsa Expo Raceway.
Billy, of Noblesville, Indiana, began the event strong by winning his heat race on Wednesday, January 11, by holding off a charge from Jimmy Voitel. Billy then finished 4th in the A Qualifier #4 and transferred to the A main on Wednesday where he finished in 21st position.
He was able to race again on Saturday, where he finished 7th in the D Main 2, but unfortunately, only the top six transferred to the C Main, and he just narrowly missed moving to the next race.

Brownsburg, Indiana (January 16, 2012) — In a field of over 260 midgets, Levi Roberts was able to narrow through all the various heat and main races in the #9 midget of Nine Racing during the five-day 26th Annual Chili Bowl Nationals to earn his way to the B Main race on Saturday’s event finale.

The Broomfield, Colorado, native drew number 34 on Friday for that evening’s races in the QuikTrip Center’s Tulsa Expo Raceway, which put the #9 midget of Nine Racing on the inside of row two in the 7th heat. Levi went on to win his heat race, then started fifth in the qualifying race, where he finished 4th. Levi started the A Main feature event in 8th and finished 13th for the night, which put him starting in 6th position for the C Main on Saturday.

Levi Roberts competed with over 260 other drivers at the 26th Annual Chili Bowl Nationals to earn his way into Saturday’s B Main race

After Friday’s races, Levi said, “The #9 car is fast. I want to thank Glenn Martin and the Nine Racing team for such a fast car, and we are ready for tomorrow.”

Saturday in the C Main 2, Levi finished in 4th position. Since the top-six transfer to the B Main, he moved up one more race, starting 22nd and passing a number of cars, but finished 9th, narrowly missing his chance to make his first A Main race at the Chili Bowl Nationals as the top six advance.

“We missed the A Main by just three spots,” said Levi. “But, it was still a good week for us as we got close to making it into the A Main. It was really enjoyable for me to again work with Glenn and the entire Nine Racing crew at the Chili Bowl.”

by
Meredith Kaplan Burns

Dillon Welch drove the #9 of Nine Racing to an eighth-place finish

Irwindale, California (November 25, 2011) — Dillon Welch made his second trip to Toyota Speedway at Irwindale count as he earned eighth place while driving the #9 of Nine Racing in the 71st running of the Turkey Night Grand Prix, on Thursday, November 24.

This prestigious event draws midget racing’s best to Southern California from across the nation, including Dillon who made the trek from Carmel, Indiana.

Dillon qualified the #9 midget in 20th position. Before the feature race began, Dillon described Toyota Speedway at Irwindale as the “most competitive track we run on. I really enjoy coming out here and look forward to a strong finish.”

Dillon stressed the importance of patience in order to move up during the 98-lap feature race, and that’s what he concentrated on as he began passing cars through the field, which included 35 midgets.

By lap 6 Dillon had already worked his way up to 17th position. After a caution flag, Dillon started lap 66 in 12th place. After another caution ended, Dillon found himself restarting lap 81 in 10th position. He worked the remaining laps in an intelligent manner to finish the race in 8th place.

Dillon candidly admitted that he worked his way up several positions at the end of the race because “I was mad at myself more than anything. I wasn’t going to let driver error cost us a good finish so I go up on the wheel and drove it.”

Dillon added that he was pleased with the car and thanked Nine Racing’s pavement specialist Dave Steele who “worked his magic and had us hooked up.”

Levi Roberts’ concluded the 2011 race season by traveling to Southern California

Irwindale, California (November 25, 2011) — When the nation’s best midget racers gathered for the 71st running of the Turkey Night Grand Prix, Levi Roberts was determined to have a strong finish at his fourth visit to Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, on Thursday, November 24.

Although Levi qualified the #91 of Nine Racing in 23rd for the USAC National Midget Series feature, he was confident that he would be able to work his way through the field to make his visit from Broomfield, Colorado, to Southern California, count.

Levi Roberts drove the #91 of Nine Racing to a 10th place finish

At the start of the feature race, cars quickly moved around as the drivers challenged for position. By the second lap, Levi had already moved into 14th place, and was in the 11th spot by lap 4. Several cautions occurred during the event, and on lap 71 Levi was in 10th place. When the race went green on lap 81 after another yellow flag, Levi was in ninth-place, but as the cars battled for position after a late-race caution, Levi brought the #91 across the start/finish line in 10th place.

“I am pleased with 10th place after starting 23 deep,” said Levi Roberts. “The first half of the race was really good and our new motor is running great. I am excited about our new Ed Pink motor program and to improve on my results for next year.” Levi plans to run an expanded race schedule with Nine Racing in 2012.

Levi Roberts thanks his sponsor Majestic Metals for their support in 2011.

Ross Rankine and the Nine Racing team celebrate in Victory Lane

Irwindale, California (November 25, 2011) — Ross Rankine capped off a stellar season by earning the much coveted rite of claiming a feature win at the 71st running of the Turkey Night Grand Prix.

Ross took the checkered flag driving the #9 Nine Racing Ford Focus Midget in the 40-lap USAC Western Pavement Ford Focus feature at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, in Southern California, on Thursday, November 24.

Ross qualified third fastest for the night, which put him on the outside of the second row to start the race due to an inverted start of the top-six qualifiers. Before the race began, Ross was very confident and willing to be patient to work up to the lead, which didn’t take him very long after the wave of the green flag.

On lap 2 Ross passed for third place and by lap 8 he got inside of car #24 driven by Paul Graham to move into second position. Although only 14 years of age, Ross drove like an established racing veteran by being patient to get the lead.

Ross’s patience paid off when on lap 16 he passed Brodie Kostecki in the #40 Ford Focus Midget to take the lead, however, a caution came out on that lap, which put Ross back to second place. After crossing the start/finish line on lap 19, Ross again got by Brodie, but this time he kept the lead and didn’t give it up, even with several more caution flags during the race. Ross went on to win the race by a straightaway over second-place finisher Nick Drake.

Ross Rankine took the lead on lap 19 Ford Focus feature event

Both Ross and Nick Drake battled for the overall USAC National Ford Focus Series Championship this season, but because Nick finished the race in second, he was able to clinch the championship, with Ross finishing only 12 point behind him in second.

Ross had an amazing race season by claiming a total of five wins, three of them on pavement driving the #9 Ford Focus Midget of Nine Racing, and earning the USAC Midwest Ford Focus Pavement Series title with Nine Racing.

Ross would like to thank his sponsors for their support to help him compete in 2011, which includes National Pride Equipment, Colors by Barr, and 4 Paws Pet Wash.

By Robert Haugh

Concluding her 2011 Dirt racing schedule, Bakersfield’s Shannon McQueen was on her way to what was likely yet another Top five run until she fell victim to hyper aggressive competitors on Lap 9 at the USAC-Western States/VRA Racing Series “Battle of the Beach” finale at the 1/5-mile Ventura Raceway on Saturday, November 19.

McQueen started fourth and moved into third on the start, where she ran for several laps before getting shuffled back to sixth after hooking a rut on Lap 5, still hanging onto a potential Top five run. Unfortunately for McQueen, her patient and smooth run was halted on Lap 9 when she encountered an over aggressive driver, getting turned over, damaging the car and ending her streak of 20 consecutive finishes, officially being scored 18th, McQueen Racing’s first DNF all season.

Masterfully piloting the McQueen Racing #7 Spike/Esslinger, McQueen claimed Heat 3 from the pole, cruising her way to a half second win over Danny Ebberts and outside pole sitter Robby Josett. McQueen was consistently among the fastest, most consistent cars among the 33-car field, within two tenths of the fastest lap times.

After 21 races, including one feature victory, six seconds, 12 Top 5s and 19 Top 10s,
McQueen clinched the Bay Cities Racing Association Dirt championship prior to the final BCRA Dirt race this year, becoming the first female to win a major Midget championship.
McQueen also boasts seven Heat race wins, two Dash wins and two fast time awards, including a track record at Silver Dollar Speedway. In addition to McQueen’s finishes, McQueen Racing also has a pair of Top 5 runs by 2012 McQueen Racing Chili Bowl teammates Michelle Decker and Harli White.

Next up for McQueen Racing is the USAC National/Western States Turkey Night Grand Prix at the ½-mile Irwindale Speedway on Thursday, November 24. McQueen will be chauffeuring Mason Cook’s #10 Beast/Mopar in her third pavement start of the season. In her two pavement starts this year, she has two second-place runs.

McQueen Racing Concludes BCRA Season With Double Top 5 Run,
Makes History With Two Female Heat Race Winners

By Robert Haugh
Concluding the Bay Cities Racing Association Midget season on a high note, Bakersfield’s Shannon McQueen and 16-year-old Oklahoman Harli White showed immense poise and patience, finishing third and fourth in the 3rd Annual Pumpkin Cup at the 1/3-mile Chowchilla Speedway on Saturday, October 29.

Fighting an incident-marred feature, McQueen and White were shuffled throughout the field throughout the opening laps, with an array of yellow flags being unfurled for multiple spins and one flip on the dry slick track, however, both remained patient, with McQueen taking over third on lap 10 and White moving into fifth on Lap 11.

With McQueen showing veteran poise and White avoiding incidents and running as smooth as many veterans, the McQueen Racing duo chauffeured their ways to third and fourth place finishes in the curfew-shortened 15-lap feature that was scheduled for 30 laps.

McQueen’s third-place run was her ninth Top 3, 12th Top 5 and 19th Top 10 finish of the season.

Showing no signs of being her first time in a Midget, Oklahoma’s Harli White paced Heat 2 form the pole in the McQueen Racing #7s Spike/Esslinger, stretching to a straightaway lead, winning the 8-lap heat over three-time BCRA champion Nick Foster, Jr., Chris Ennis and former BCRA Rookie-of-the-Year Kevin Morris. White was recently announced as McQueen racing’s third 2012 Chili Bowl Midget Nationals driver.

Masterfully piloting the McQueen Racing #7 Spike/Esslinger, McQueen started last in heat 3, methodically passing several strong, fast cars, to finesse her way to win in dominating fashion over Connor Kassik, multiple-time feature winner Scott Pierovich and Nick Chivello.

With their respective Heat race wins, McQueen and White made history, becoming the first female duo to win Heat races in BCRA competition in the same race.

Fellow Chili Bowl teammate Michelle Decker of Oklahoma was also on-hand, assisting Harli in her Midget debut. Harli made the A-Main in two different classes at the Tulsa Shootout, has multiple feature wins in ASCS2 Micro competition plus countless Top 5 and Top 10 runs.

After 20 races, including one feature victory, six seconds, 12 Top 5s and 19 Top 10s, McQueen clinched the Bay Cities Racing Association Dirt championship prior to the final Dirt race, becoming the first female to win a major Midget championship. McQueen also boasts six Heat race wins, two Dash wins and two fast time awards, including a track record at Silver Dollar Speedway. In addition to McQueen’s finishes, McQueen Racing also has a pair of Top 5 runs by Decker and White.

“Lightning” McQueen Claims Second at Lakeport Once Again - 18th Consecutive Top Ten Run
by Robert Haugh
Bakersfield, CA – October 15, 2011
Starting sixth and methodically fighting past several strong, fast cars by utilizing the top line, Bakersfield’s Shannon “Lightning” McQueen claimed second in the Bay Cities Racing Association Midget race at the 1/4-mile Lakeport Speedway in Lakeport, CA on Saturday, October 15, her 18th consecutive Top 10 finish and second consecutive second-place run on pavement.

Masterfully piloting the Paul Eskesen #10c Beast/Mopar, McQueen was catching race leader Travis Berryhill as the checkers flew, coming across the line a half car length behind Berryhill in Bob Rosen’s famous #4. Working every line of the track, McQueen diligently fought her way to the front as the car was able to stick on the apron, bottom, middle and top lines of the fast quarter-mile paved oval.

A late race caution bunched the field with around eight laps left. “They [Berryhill and Rosen] did a great job and were fast all weekend … it seemed like Travis’ car would come in really quick and he sort of got away from us and it would take our car 3-4 laps to get going. I think I just needed another lap or two for the win, stated McQueen.

Having started sixth in Heat 2, McQueen maneuvered past her way to a fourth place finish in the eight-lap Heat race. McQueen also placed third in the Dash.

“I would like to thank Paul Eskesen for giving me the opportunity to run his car.  He has great equipment that is always well prepared and fast.  It is truly an honor to get to drive for Paul, we had a great time and we were fast and competitive all weekend,” said McQueen.

After 19 races, including one feature victory, seven seconds, 12 Top 5s and 18 Top 10s, McQueen has already clinched the Bay Cities Racing Association Dirt points championship with one Dirt race still remaining. McQueen became the first female to win a major Midget championship!

Next up for McQueen Racing is the Bay Cities Racing Association race on Saturday, October 29 at the 1/3-mile Chowchilla Speedway. At that race, McQueen will be joined by 2012 Chili Bowl Midget Nationals teammate, 16-year-old Harli White of Oklahoma, with fellow teammate Michelle Decker of Oklahoma also present to help coach Harli in her Midget debut.

Levi Roberts drove the #9 midget of Nine Racing at the recent Gold Crown Midget Nationals at Tri City Speedway.
Levi made a strong showing by winning a heat race, scoring a second in a heat race, and finishing second in the B-main #2.

Brownsburg, Indiana (October 11, 2011) — Coming from an asphalt track background, Levi Roberts continues to make the transition to dirt track racing, and drove the #9 midget of Nine Racing in the 3rd annual Gold Crown Midget Nationals this past weekend at Tri City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, Illinois.

The attractive $10,000 prize to win Saturday’s final race drew 56 midgets to the three-day event.

Racing action began on Thursday, October 6, and Levi started off strong by winning his heat race and collected enough passing points to earn a front-row starting position in the 25-lap main event. At the start of the race, however, Levi made contact with another car and slipped back a number of positions to eventually finish the feature in 17th.

Then on Friday evening Levi ran 2nd in his heat race, which gave him enough points to start 15th in the main event. During the 25-lap main event, Levi showed promise as he was passing cars but during the process made a slight mistake that cost him a good finishing position and ultimately finished the Friday main event in 22nd.

On Saturday night Levi made a strong showing in the B-main #2 and finished second behind Kyle Larson and just ahead of Thomas Messeraul. Throughout the weekend Levi earned enough points to be able to start the Saturday night 50-lap feature in 10th. Again Levi showed great promise as he passed cars and would gain ground and then via circumstances would lose a spot or two. When the checkered flag waved, Levi finished 17th.

“Glenn Martin and Krieg Polland gave me a fast race car this weekend, which allowed me to make all three features and to be competitive,” said Levi Roberts. “I just need more time on dirt and then I can take advantage of the speed that I have to work with. It is good to see so many cars and drivers at this race and it was really fun to put on a great show for the crowd. I look forward to coming back here next year to race again in the Gold Crown Midget Nationals.”

Levi will be back in the Nine Racing #9 midget for the final USAC National points event of the 2011 season for the 71st running of the annual Thanksgiving Grand Prix at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, on November 24.

McQueen Racing is pleased to announce 16-year-old Harli White of Oklahoma will be driving one of three potent McQueen Racing Spike/Esslinger mounts for the 2012 Chili Bowl Midget Nationals.

Young Ryan Krachun Successfully Tests Nine Racing Ford Focus Midget

by Meredith Kaplan Burns
Nine Racing Inc. / Performance Racing Industry
Brownsburg, Indiana (September 29, 2011) — After winning multiple championships in the USAC .25 Midget program this season, 13-year-old Ryan Krachun, of Neshanic, New Jersey, climbed into a full-size Ford Focus Midget of Nine Racing Inc. for the first time to test the car at the Bryant Heating & Cooling Indianapolis Speedrome on Thursday, September 22. Ryan plans to make the jump into Ford Focus Midgets for the 2012 season.

“We met Ryan and his father Mike at the Milwaukee USAC race event in June and determined that Ryan was more than ready to have a test session in our Ford Focus Midget,” said Nine Racing team owner Steve Lewis. “We waited to test Ryan until now so he could focus on doing well in the USAC .25 Midget Series.”

Ryan quickly adapted to the Ford Focus Midget from the much smaller .25 Midget. “He learned quickly,” added Billy Wease, of the Nine Racing team, who helped Ryan with how to approach the Speedrome’s 1/5-mile paved oval.

“Driving a full-sized midget race car for the first time was really an exciting experience for me,” exclaimed Ryan Krachun. “Billy Wease and Glenn Martin took good care of me and it really helped to have them explain how to approach the line. Pretty soon I was comfortable and having fun.”

Ryan capped his .25 Midget career with five championships in 2011. He ended the USAC Next Generation and Dirt Triple Crown Series by winning the “B” class in both series, and earned the Light 160, Light World Formula and Sr. Animal titles in the Dirt Triple Crown, as well as placing 3rd in the Light 160 Next Generation series.
Nine Racing’s 2011 sponsor lineup includes K&N Engineering, Eibach Springs, Weld Racing, Klotz Synthetic Lubricants, Penske Racing Shocks, Performance Friction Brakes, ASE, Earl’s Performance Plumbing, SSi Decals, PJ1, and Hoosier Racing Tire.

Stellar Night Caps Winning Season For Ross Rankine

Nine Racing Inc. / Performance Racing Industry
Brownsburg, Indiana (September 19, 2011) — Ross Rankine, of New London, Ohio, added an exclamation point to his 2011 USAC Midwest Ford Focus Pavement Championship season by capping off the series’ last pavement race of the season at Columbus Motor Speedway, on Saturday, September 17, by setting fast time in practice and qualifying, and charging through the field to take the win in his National Pride Equipment Nine Racing Ford Focus Midget in commanding fashion.

Ross began the night firmly in position to win the points’ championship, but that wasn’t enough for him. He set the quick time in both practice sessions, and then set the fast time in qualifying at 13.937 seconds, and he was the only driver who qualified in the 13-second range.

Ross started the main event in 7th position, but drove “an absolutely outstanding race,” according to Nine Racing Crew Chief Glenn Martin. “He stepped up.”

And step up he did. By lap 20, Ross was battling with series’ second-place driver James Robertson and made the pass for the lead. Ross closed the door as he led every lap after that to bring home the checkered flag.

“This is definitely the way that I wanted to conclude my first season in the USAC Ford Focus midgets,” said Ross Rankine. “I want to thank my sponsor National Pride Equipment and the entire Nine Racing team who gave me all that I needed to win this race tonight and the series’ pavement championship.”

Even though Ross won the 2011 USAC Midwest Ford Focus Pavement Championship, he is only two points behind Patrick Bruns in the USAC Midwest Ford Focus Dirt Championship with three races to go. After the races on September 30 and October 1, Ross will again drive the Nine Racing Ford Focus Midget at the annual Turkey Night Grand Prix at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, in California, on Thursday, November 24.

Nine Racing’s 2011 sponsor lineup includes K&N Engineering, Eibach Springs, Weld Racing, Klotz Synthetic Lubricants, Penske Racing Shocks, Performance Friction Brakes, ASE, Earl’s Performance Plumbing, SSi Decals, PJ1, and Hoosier Racing Tire.

“Lightning” McQueen Claims 17th Consecutive Top Ten Run In Ventura
Bakersfield, CA – September 17, 2011
Shannon showing She is serious about this years racing!

                                                                                                                   unknown photographer?
Showcasing reliability and resilience, Bakersfield’s Shannon “Lightning” McQueen brought home her 17th consecutive Top 10 finish in the USAC-Western States/VRA race at the 1/5-mile Ventura Raceway in Ventura, CA on Saturday, September 17.

Masterfully piloting the McQueen Racing #7 Spike/Esslinger, McQueen started in 14th due to a poor pill draw. With a racier than usual track that has been redone and locked down fast for everyone, McQueen’s veteran poise allowed her to guide the McQueen Racing #7 Spike/Esslinger to a seventh-place finish on the difficult-to-pass bullring oval, advancing more positions than any other driver in the feature.

"The Motor ran great, the car was real good, just on a track like that it is very hard to pass,” said Shannon McQueen of the race at Ventura that saw the track surface much-improved from earlier in the year when McQueen last competed there.

Having started at the tail of Heat 2, McQueen valiantly tried making moves, but with no brakes on the bottom-feeding track, she was only able to advance on position in the Heat to finish fifth.

After 18 races, including one feature victory, six seconds, 11 Top 5s and 17 Top 10s, McQueen has already clinched the Bay Cities Racing Association Dirt points championship with one Dirt race still remaining.

Next up for McQueen Racing is the Bay Cities Racing Association race on Saturday, October 15 at the ¼-mile Lakeport Speedway as Shannon competes in her second pavement race of the year in Paul Eskesen’s #10c Beast/Mopar in which she placed second in July.

McQueen Racing would like to thank all of our wonderful sponsors Lucas Oil Products, K&N Filters, Simpson Race Products, JE Piston Company, Advanced Racing Suspensions, Eibach Springs, Ruth Engineering, American Fabrication and Esslinger Racing Engines by Duane McQueen.

Dillon Welch Earns Top-Five Finish At Columbus Motor Speedway

by Meredith Kaplan Burns

Brownsburg, Indiana (September 19, 2011) — Dillon Welch, of Carmel, Indiana, drove the Nine Racing #9 midget to an admirable top-five finish by claiming fifth at the USAC Mopar D1 midget feature at Columbus Motor Speedway, in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday, September 17.

Dillon Welch Earns Top-Five Finish At Columbus Motor Speedway

Dillon began the night by qualifying in 9th, and finished 5th in his heat race. Because the Nine Racing team decided to make some major changes to the car, Dillon had to start at the back of the field for the main event. However, those changes paid off as he charged through the field and finished the 30-lap event in 5th place.

“Earning a top five after starting the race at the back of the pack here at Columbus Motor Speedway shows how hard the Nine Racing team worked to give me a good car, which allowed me to drive the wheels off this car,” said Dillon Welch. “I am looking forward to driving for Nine Racing again soon.”

Dillon will next compete in the #9 midget at Toledo Speedway, on Saturday, October 15, for another USAC Mopar D1 event, and will conclude the season with Nine Racing at the Turkey Night Grand Prix at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on Thanksgiving.

Dillon Welch is sponsored by St. Vincent Sports Performance, Z-Line Designs, The Studio, BioStorage Technologies, CASE Remodeling, Validated Custom Solutions, Sullivan Hardware, Brownsburg Muffler, Average Joe's, Row Printing and Windsor Jewelers.

Kyle Hamilton Makes Strong Debut At The Milwaukee Mile With Third-Place Finish
 by Meredith Kaplan Burns
Brownsburg, Indiana (June 20, 2011) — Recent high school graduate and rising midget car star Kyle Hamilton, of Danville, Indiana, made his Milwaukee Mile debut count as he came home with a podium finish in 3rd place.

Kyle drove the #9 midget of Nine Racing in Saturday’s USAC Mopar National Midget Pavement Series event on the one-mile paved oval, which was held in conjunction with the IndyCar Series’ return to Milwaukee. Kyle worked closely with Nine Racing’s team manager Glenn Martin and the team’s “paved-mile expert” Dave Steele during the Thursday and Friday practice sessions and methodically worked up to speed.

“This was my very first time on a mile track and I was confident that Glenn and Dave would give me a strong car, so I could just concentrate on carefully building up speed in the two practice sessions,” said Kyle Hamilton.

Kyle quickly adapted to the high-speed, flat Milwaukee Mile and ended up 5th overall in the final timed practice session on Friday. Unfortunately for Kyle, as well as his teammate Levi Roberts, the speed developed in practice did not carry over into the qualifying session on Friday afternoon. Kyle qualified 10th for the feature with a lap time of 29.100 seconds.

The 25-lap USAC Midget feature was scheduled late in the day on Saturday, June 18, as the sun was setting. Twenty-two midgets came down to take the green flag but there were three aborted starts. Finally the green flag waved for good and Kyle immediately started his march to the front. Kyle continued his charge by methodically passing cars. With two laps left in the race, he had worked up to 4th position and then made a strong pass on Bobby Santos to finish the race in 3rd.

“As the race progressed I became more confident,” said Kyle. “The car was perfect from the very beginning. It was fun to race out there and I learned how to use the draft and pass cars.”

As a result of the 8th-place finish at Lucas Oil Raceway Park and the 3rd-place finish at Milwaukee, Kyle is now ranked 8th in the USAC National Midget Pavement Series points standings.

The Nine Racing team next travels to Newton, Iowa, for another USAC National Midget Pavement event that will be held on the fast, banked 7/8-mile Iowa Speedway track on Friday, June 24. Both Kyle Hamilton and teammate Levi Roberts will be entered in the Iowa Speedway Midget event that is again being held in conjunction with the IndyCar Series.

Nine Racing’s 2011 sponsor lineup includes K&N Engineering, Eibach Springs, Weld Racing, Klotz Synthetic Lubricants, Penske Racing Shocks, Performance Friction Brakes, ASE, Earl’s Performance Plumbing, SSi Decals, PJ1, and Hoosier Racing Tire.

Obstacles Hinder Levi Roberts’ Progress At The Milwaukee Mile
by Meredith Kaplan Burns
Brownsburg, Indiana (June 20, 2011)  — After recording a strong, 3rd-place finish driving the #91 of Nine Racing at the legendary Night Before the 500 Race in May, Broomfield, Colorado-native Levi Roberts came to Milwaukee with high expectations.

Levi and the Nine Racing crew worked well together during the two timed practice sessions on Thursday and Friday, June 16 and 17, before Saturday’s USAC Mopar National Midget Series feature race at the Milwaukee Mile with Levi on top of the time charts for both sessions. Levi recorded the 2nd fastest practice time on Friday and the car was excellent on long runs, which brought strong expectations for a good qualifying effort on Saturday. Unfortunately, the car was not able to transfer the speed developed from practice to qualifying and Levi earned a qualifying lap time of 21.144, which placed him 12th among the 23 drivers attempting to qualify for the event.

“Both Glenn Martin and Dave Steele worked really hard on the set-up and gave me hints as to how to approach the mile,” said Levi Roberts. “The car was perfect during both the Thursday and Friday practice sessions. Then for some crazy reason when I went out to qualify the car developed a massive push condition, which dramatically affected my chances of earning a top qualification position and a good starting spot for the race was eliminated.”

For the late Saturday afternoon, 25-lap USAC Mopar National Midget race, Levi started in 12th place. At the wave of the green flag Levi got an excellent start and it appeared that he would be moving to the front. Then as the race progressed the “push condition” reappeared. Late in the race Levi was tapped from behind by another car and his car spun, which hurt the opportunity for a decent finish. Levi finished the race in 19th.

“This was my first time on the Milwaukee Mile and I really liked the track,” said Levi. “I very much enjoyed gaining the big-track experience. At our post race briefing, we believe we found the solution to the handling problem, and I am now looking forward to next week’s Iowa Speedway event. I have been to Iowa Speedway, which I like, and it is a great event with great fan support.”

Levi will be joined by teammate Kyle Hamilton at Iowa Speedway on Friday, June 24. This event will be held in conjunction with the IndyCar Series.

Levi is currently ranked 4th in USAC Mopar National Midget Pavement Series points and 8th in the overall USAC Mopar National Midget Championship.

Nine Racing’s 2011 sponsor lineup includes K&N Engineering, Eibach Springs, Weld Racing, Klotz Synthetic Lubricants, Penske Racing Shocks, Performance Friction Brakes, ASE, Earl’s Performance Plumbing, SSi Decals, PJ1, and Hoosier Racing Tire.

Michael Lewis Returns Home To Race At Toyota Speedway At Irwindale

by Meredith Kaplan Burns
Laguna Beach, California (June 20, 2011) — Michael Lewis, of Laguna Beach, California, returned back to the United States during a break between Formula 3 Italia events to race a High Point Racing (HPR) Late Model car at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on Saturday night, June 18. Michael, who is currently ranked third in the F-3 Italia Championship, accepted the offer extended by HPR team owner Tim Huddleston to join his team for six Late Model events this summer at the Irwindale race track.

The evening started off well for Michael as he was on top of the speed charts for the second practice session. When it came time to qualify Michael climbed into his blue HPR #59 Chevy Late Model and qualified 4th with a lap time of 18.961. HPR teammate Brandon Davis set fast time for the evening with a lap time of 18.751.

“I was very pleased with our qualifying effort,” said Michael Lewis. “I really enjoy working with Tim, Jeff Schrader of the RaceCar Factory, and my spotter/mechanic Mark Perry. I am new at racing Late Models, so I rely on their experience and advice. They give me all the support and a fast car to drive.”

Saturday’s Irwindale program included two Late Model feature races. Michael started the first 30-lap feature in third position and missed a shift right at the wave of the green flag causing him to slip back several positions. As the race progressed he passed some cars and finished the race in 11th. For the second 30-lap feature, Michael started in 4th and got a great start and was going down the back straight in second position when the car in front of him hit the third turn wall hard and bounced back directly in front of Michael, which ended Michael’s night when his HPR Chevy Late Model took a big hit.

“Michael did well tonight as it was only his second time in a Late Model car,” said Tim Huddleston. “He qualified really well and he just needs to learn some of the ‘tricks of the trade’ and he will be running up front.”

Michael Lewis returns to Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on Saturday, June 25, in the High Point Racing #59 Late Model. Michael will return to Italy to prepare for Rounds 5 and 6 of the Formula 3 Italia Championship at the Imola Circuit, July 16—17.

Michael’s sponsor lineup for 2011 includes Eibach Springs, K&N Engineering, SKF, GoPro, Klotz Synthetic Lubricants, Cometic Gasket, Bell Helmets, Subè Sports and Calico Coatings.

Formula 3 Italia Test Pushes Back Michael Lewis 2011 Debut at Irwindale

by Meredith Kaplan Burns   PRI

Laguna Beach, California (June 8, 2011) — With the Formula 3 Italia race season in full swing Michael Lewis has already recorded two podium finishes in four rounds to place him third in the series’ points standings. Although his next Formula 3 Italia race isn’t until July 16 at Imola, today he tested at Spa in Belgium with the PREMA Powerteam to help them continue on their quest for Michael’s first Formula 3 Italia win.

Michael was scheduled to return to his native Southern California for this Saturday’s Auto Club Late Model race at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, however, the testing has subsequently pushed back Michael’s 2011 American race debut with Tim Huddleston’s High Point Racing team to Saturday, June 18. Michael will also compete at Irwindale the following Saturday, June 25, for the High Point Racing team.

American race fans can also expect to see Michael racing in the US after the conclusion of the 2011 Formula 3 Italia season, when Michael is scheduled to race at the Las Vegas Bull Ring in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 4 and 5, and will compete in the season-ending Auto Club Late Models race at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on Saturday, November 26.

Sitterly Battles to Fifth Saturday at Oswego

 by Keith Shampine
OSWEGO, N.Y. – Otto Sitterly and the Nicotra Racing / G&I Homes No. 7 team rebounded from a rough Oswego Speedway supermodified season opener Memorial Day weekend to finish a strong fifth Saturday in the Big O’s second event of the new year.

Sitterly started eighth in the 45-lap feature and got boxed in early, forcing the four-time Oswego champion to hold position in the back half of the top 10 until the field shook out.

Sitting ninth after 10 circuits, Otto began his charge. While single-file racing throughout the field was the story of the night, Sitterly was one of the only drivers able to stick passes, beginning with an inside move by Tim Snyder for seventh on lap 23.

After two cautions around the lap 30 mark, Otto battled hard and wheeled his blue Hawk Jr. chassis by opening night winner Randy Ritskes for sixth, and later past Ray Graham Jr. to take over the last slot in the top five.

While clearly one of the fastest cars on the five-eighths-mile lakeside oval, and boasting a fast lap of 17.146 to prove it, fifth place was all Otto could muster as he watched Double Deuce Racing teammates Dave Gruel and Pat Lavery cross the stripe one-two, followed by Canadian Dave McKnight and 1996 Indy 500 starter Joe Gosek third and fourth.

Otto spoke about the night and the tough supermodified competition he’s facing each week at The Steel Palace.

“The car was pretty decent. We may be off a little bit, but it’s pretty close. At the start of the race, I tried to let things sort out, and we got boxed in pretty good. A couple of the fast cars took off, but I just didn’t feel there was any place to go early (in the race).

“Late in the race, I could see (the top cars) backing up,” Sitterly continued, “but when there are that many good cars in front of you, there’s no two ways around it, track position just means so much. There are a lot of really equal cars, a lot of good drivers, and basically you just have to keep wearing on the guy in front of you until you get him.”

When asked by LakesideRacingNews.com’s Chris Porter why passing seems to be at a premium at this early stage of the season, Otto cited a couple of reasons.

“There are a lot of really good cars, and the track is not really a two-lane track. A lot of equal equipment… and there’s not much passing going on. I think track position really means a lot.”

Saturday’s fifth-place run netted Otto his first top five of the season after Memorial Day’s Jim Shampine Memorial 75 featured a pair of accidents that relegated the Canajoharie, N.Y., veteran to a disappointing 16th-place result.

The 16th and fifth have Sitterly unofficially 10th in the standings, but only 33 markers behind point leader Ritskes.  With a formidable 11-race non-wing supermodified schedule in 2011, including twin 30s later this month, the Nicotra team has plenty of time to hit its stride and make a run at its fourth Oswego championship in a row.

Next up for the G&I Homes-sponsored team is another regular 45-lapper this Saturday, June 11 at the John and Eric Torrese-owned speed plant.  Racing starts at 6:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.oswegospeedway.com.

Brownsburg, Indiana (June 2, 2011) — Seeking to gain more oval track experience in his racing career, Ireland’s Ali Jackson has moved to the Indianapolis area and kicked off his 2011 race season at the Bryant Heating & Cooling Indianapolis Speedrome on Wednesday, June 1. Jackson’s move across the Atlantic has so far proven more than luck for this Irishman as he earned a top-five finish in the Nine Racing midget while competing in the first USAC Mopar D1 Midget Car Pavement Series event of the season.

Ali worked closely with crew chief Glenn Martin to get the car dialed in during the three practice sessions for the heat race and main event, which proved successful as Ali won his heat race. He transferred to the 40-lap main event, along with eight other cars. Ali lined up in the sixth starting spot, and in typical Speedrome fashion, plenty of racing action took place, and Ali finished the event in fifth place.

“This is a great track and it is a fun place to race,” commented Ali Jackson. “I am learning how to get the most out of the car and keep it in one piece. I was pleased with a top-five finish and I know with the help of Glenn Martin and Billy Wease that I will get more comfortable here as the season progresses.”

Ali Jackson has made the commitment to run the entire USAC Mopar D1 Midget Car Pavement Series with the Nine Racing team. Ali will return to the Bryant Heating & Cooling Indianapolis Speedrome on Wednesday, June 15, for the next USAC Mopar D1 Midget Car Pavement race.

Nine Racing’s 2011 sponsor lineup includes K&N Engineering, Eibach Springs, Weld Racing, Klotz Synthetic Lubricants, Penske Racing Shocks, Performance Friction Brakes, ASE, Earl’s Performance Plumbing, SSi Decals, PJ1, and Hoosier Racing Tire.

                           Levi Roberts  Earns Podium Appearance

Laguna Beach, California (May 31, 2011) — Levi Roberts ran a terrific race by placing third in his first start with Nine Racing at Saturday’s 66th Night Before the 500 USAC National Midget Series event at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.

Levi Roberts (seen in photo on far right) scored a
            podium finish by placing third
while driving the #91 of Nine Racing.

Levi recorded the fourth fastest time in qualifying of 20.993 while driving the #91. of Nine Racing to an impressive fourth spot of 33 cars vying to make the main event

Although Levi didn’t finish high enough in his heat race to transfer to the main event, he took the grid for the semi-feature, which he won the 12-lap event.

As weather has been an issue across the country recently, rain caused a two-hour delay for the running of the 50-lap main event, but the race was still able to take place. Once the green flag waved, Levi took charge immediately and early in the race moved into third place. Midway during the main event Levi was running in second, but he was passed during the re-start after a late-race caution, which resulted in the third-place finish.

"I really enjoyed running up front during the entire race and had my eye on the win,” described Levi Roberts. “The car was perfect all night long, but the restart late in the race hurt our chances for a win. Both Dave Steele and Glenn Martin worked really hard all day long to give me a car that would run up front all night long.”

“Levi made a tremendous effort at the annual Night Before The 500 Midget race and I am very pleased with his third-place finish,” said Steve Lewis, Nine Racing team owner. “While Levi made a strong run in qualifying, he didn’t earn a transfer position in the heat race so that put him farther back on the starting grid for the main event than we originally expected. Levi was able to stay close to the leader for most of the race. We are looking forward to visiting the Milwaukee Mile next month.”

As a result of Levi's third-place finish at the Night Before The 500 race, he moved up to fourth place in the USAC National Midget Pavement Series. Levi’s next scheduled USAC National Midget Pavement race for Nine Racing will be at the Milwaukee Mile on June 17 and 18.

Nine Racing’s 2011 sponsor lineup includes K&N Engineering, Eibach Springs, Weld Racing, Klotz Synthetic Lubricants, Penske Racing Shocks, Performance Friction Brakes, ASE, Earl’s Performance Plumbing, SSi Decals, PJ1, and Hoosier Racing Tire.
